How To Play Team Fortress 2 - A Beginner's Guide

What Is Team Fortress 2?

Team Fortress 2 is the long-anticipated sequel to Team Fortress Classic (TFC), a popular add-on to the original classic game Half Life.  The Team Fortress series of games is unique in the way that fast action is mixed with strategy to provide a thinking man’s online shooter that also appeals to the hardcore ‘itchy trigger finger’ fans.  With unique graphics and improved technology, Team Fortress 2 has the potential to become the best class-based multiplayer game ever made.  This guide is meant to inspire more people to play Team Fortress 2 by telling you everything you need to know to get started playing today.

The Point of the Game

Team Fortress drops you into an ongoing battle between the Reds and the Blues.  Each team starts off in their own base with the mission of capturing the opponents’ flag, which logically resides in a place known as the Flag Room, deep inside the opponents’ base.  The game is timed and the team that has captured the most flags is the winner.

Those familiar with another popular Half Life mod, CounterStrike, may notice some striking differences when they first go to play a Team Fortress game.  The most dramatic is that one shot will rarely kill you.  Unless you’ve been shot directly in the head by a sniper, a single hit in Team Fortress will only damage you.

Another big difference from CounterStrike is that when you are killed, rather than sit out the rest of the game, you respawn back at your base.  I’m a huge fan of this, as you also then have the option to change your class and better attack the enemies weaknesses.

What You Need to Know to Play

When you first join a Team Fortress game, you will be prompted to choose which character, or class, you want to be.  The classes are:

Demoman – Lobs explosives
Engineer – Builds sentries
Heavy – Machine gun
Medic – Lethal injection
Pyro – Flamethrower
Scout –Speed
Sniper – Sniper rifle
Soldier – Rocket Launcher
Spy - Stealth

Each class has different strengths as well as weaknesses that can be exploited by other classes.  Experienced players will often start someone as a scout to try to steal the flag before the opponent’s defenses are set.  Even if the scout is unsuccessful, they can usually see how the opponent is planning to defend the flag and relay that to his teammates so that they can choose the proper player classes to take out the defense.

If you’re inexperienced, I’d recommend going with the soldier as he is an all around character with equal amount of offensive and defensive skill.  In any case, once you’ve picked your class, it’s time to play.  To ‘capture the flag’, your team must pick it up from the opponents’ Flag Room and carry it back to your own Flag Room.  If the flag carrier is killed while carrying the flag, it will remain at the spot it was dropped for a set amount of time.  If no one on either team grabs the flag within a set amount of time, it instantly returns to its Flag Room.

Summary

That’s the basic information you need to play Team Fortress 2.  When Team Fortress 2 is finally released, this section will be enhanced to include all the player classes strengths and weaknesses.  We’ll also have a Tips & Strategy section that will enable players to contribute more advanced tips on how to win at TF2.

Unknown about the demo, Perhapse in the future.  Possable Guest passes from game owners.  The game will be just under $60 as the "Orange Box" package.  This will be the only way to purchase it at release time.  If your unwilling to buy that (hl2:ep3/portal/tf2) then you'll half to wait abit.

Medic – Lethal injection

Were you on crack when you wrote this?  Medics are not offensive, they are support for other characters (heavy soldier demo etc).  Their hypo gun is only used as a last resort, and I can't imagine how the hell you came up with lethal injection as a description.

yeah. the medics hypodermic needle shooter is a very poor weapon.

This is a fairly useless guide at this point. too bad it ranks so high in Google which is how I found it, I could probably do a better one and I am far from an expert.

I also agree that the "Lethal injection" summary is silly. I've been playing for a few days and the medic is exclusively a healer, although I have got a handful of kills with my bonesaw.

I'll second in saying that this is not the sequal to TFC.   TFC was a version of TF that came AFTER the original team fortress.   TFC < TF for quake

Yeah...points cap too fast.

All in all, the game is super fun. Everything is far more balanced than TFC (every class doesnt have a machine gun or shotgun).  I'm glad they took grenades out. Those were a little ridiculous at times, and I am so glad that everything in general looks amazing. The game is extremely fun with a lot of attention to detail. I would have to give it at least 8.5 - 9.5 / 10

This is pretty much the most useless guide ever.

Engineer builds sentries... yeah. This is why public servers such so much. Because maybe the rare engy will have some metal left to build a dispenser every now and then... but it's really really rare to see a pair of well-placed teleporter entry/exit structures.

You are wrong- sorry

The Medic does not have lethal injection.

You do not capture flags, but intelligence (briefcases) or lockdown areas in a sort of point capture game.

Play Team Fortress 2 before you write an article about it based on your Team Fortress 1 experience.

as a TF and TFC vet i've been hoping for a "new" Team Fortress to make it to the shelves after the first TF2 never really made it and got to it's 3rd revision. Glad to see this one is gonna make it.

Guess i'll have to quit WoW and get addicted to TF again :)

Hey Amareis. Go fuck yourself. Really.
The intelligence capturing is still ctf hence the ctf_ extension on maps. The lethal injection was supposed to be a short subtitle for the medic. You also don't even know how long ago this was made. You could be insulting the information of a 06 article.

What is sad is all the younglings believing TF2 is a sequel from TFC.
TFC was a VERY POOR RIP off of the original QWTF (Quake World Team Fortress).

Team Fortress 2 has been talked about for years, when John Carmack killed Quake on purpose by releasing the source code, so his new game Quake3, would get more people to buy it and play it, which didn't work.

Then HALF-LIFE came to be and everyone started to play that and Valve decided to disrespect TF and make an embarrassment of TF, called TFC.

SOO, when the younglings are speaking about how TF2 came from TFC, remember the history and what is the father and ruler of TFC.....QWTF!

It can be a little more in depth.  You said once the game is released we'll have a more in-depth beginner's guide?  I'll check back often to see when it's updated.

I just started playing TF2 and I get my ass kicked frequently.  I tend to have better luck with the scout as speed is a good defense and offense against any other classes.

r4sk3n, you are correct in stating that Valve offered them jobs.  Not much of a choice they had since John Carmack crushed them with the release of the source code.  Plus, at the time Half-Life was the expected game that was going to take over the gaming industry.

Once Half-life came out they made the mod TFC (which they never should have called it that).  TFC was a disgrace to the original qwtf.  My point is in my original post is to set some younglings straight and the author of this summary in stating, "Team Fortress 2 is the long-anticipated sequel to Team Fortress Classic (TFC)"  This is FALSE.....TF2 was talked about and long anticipated before TFC even came out.

Mr. Pie... I can only think of a few things better on TFC than TF2. And they are:

1 that every map on TFC is ctf
2 the spy can fake death (but on tf2 they couldnt because of physics)
3 the heavys minigun was more accurate

there.... all the good things ALL OF THEM!
