Nice one, give me enough time to get home.  Its 1pm here in Uk at the moment, get home around 6pm, just in time....that is if I can log into Steam, tried this morning and got an error, which is odd as it worked last night.  Could be the number of users I suppose.

Sorry ChrisFromSweden but that is total bullshit what you are writing there...on the steam website it only says start playing on 17.sep. not in the morning or one minute before midnight or in which timezone.

You paid for the orange box and even got 5$ bucks off because you preordered...you can play the beta with that but you HAVENT paid for the beta. Yea if the shedule for the buss says arrives on sep. 17th then you may have to wait from 0:00 -> 23:59....

They should make it clear that they mean Pacific time when they advertise it as September 17th.
They have localisation, they should've made it 18th in Europe, Asia and Australia if they knew it was late in the day.
But, I've waited long enough, a few more hours won't hurt... but its still a bad show.

I guess they are waiting till about 6PM PST (-8:00 GMT). This is so that when the game is released, it is not overcrowded by a bunch of 11 year olds running around acting like idiots, ruining the game. Instead this way more mature players will be in game from the start, giving the game a better impression of teamwork. That's my guess.

When I bought the orangebox I bought it on the premise that I'd be able to play TF2 beta on the 17th Sept.  Indeed it's still the 17th in the UK, however it's 19:35 now and that leaves just 4 hours 25 mins. 

Valve have done their PR no good with this sort of attitude.  I shall think twice before purchasing another valve game.  If they say the 17th then open it up on the 17th, not late on the 17th but at the crack of dawn.  I took the day off work just so I could play the beta.  Next time say you're releasing on the 17th at a specific time like 2pm PST.  Uncertainty breeds negitivity.

It makes no difference if previous releases were before or after 4pm.  The fact remains, they said the 17th.  I wouldn't have had a problem had they said 2pm PST on the 17th, I'd have known where I stood and accepted it.

Point 1:  Judging by your reply and vulgar use of words I'd say you're not exactly top notch material.  Firstly,  I think a clock lesson is needed.  12:11 is 11 minutes after midnight, it can also mean 11 minutes after 12pm on the kiddy clock though so perhaps this is the level we're dealing with here.  To advance our class to the next level, If the big hand's pointing to the 12 and the small hand to the 1 and it's the afternoon then that 13:00 and not 1:00am in the adult world.

Snoop0, this is a beta release, most betas, weather it be a online MMO or otherwise almost never start at 00.00.

IF you MAKE it OFFICAL 17/9 September, WITH no other information, it SHOULD be out 17/9 WORLDWIDE.

It does clearly state when you buy the orange box or tf2 that the release date is liable to change and no purchases should be made withou being aware of that fact.  So if you are sittin there closin and restartin steam then just chill, they have no legal obliation to release it today - it would be nice but I'd rather get teh game when teh servers work and it doesnt crash instantly than right now tbh.

This is the funniest thing I've read in the world.   I sprang for the OB, in main because I'd get to play TF2 a bit early.   I'm in the UK, so starting Steam this morning was done with a bit of a chuckle.  Damn near gave me a coronary when the Halo 3 beta started in the morning over here - why anyone would expect a US-based company to synchronise anywhere else is beyond me - sounds like a hearty bit of yank-bashing for the sake of it, really.   If launching during one's home-timezone daytime is arrogant, how d'you think insisting on your *own* timezone - when all sane folk are snoring happily in their beds there - sounds?

Besides.   It's Valve.   It's Team Fortress 2 for goodness' sake.  You were expecting it to be *on time*?   Are you drunk, or something?   Gabe Newell's watch only has four hour-ticks on it's face for th'love of gawd!  I think he wrote the "Time Remaining" gadget in Windows, for that matter....  acting surprised about it is just unrealistic.

Its in my games list.  When I bought the Orange Box it was added to my games and I just had to right click it and select preload.  It started downloading right away.

    I just received an email from Valve. TF2 is going to be released between 4pm and 7pm (not sure which timezone it is under). I personally was not emailed I was told by my manager and the email is being forwarded to me (I work for www.hardknocksorlando.com)

Valve is based in Bellevue, Washington, and thus falls under Pacific Standard Time. As of writing this message, it is 2:23pm PST, September 17, 2007. According to the Valve press release on the Orange Box preorder, all that was stated was that the Team Fortress 2 beta would be released to the public on September 17 (and you have to assume they mean it falls under PST and not any other time zone because that is where Valve is situated geographically). So, you have no reason to pissed. At all. They're not making you wait any longer than they said, because they said September 17 and guess what? It's still September 17.

If you want to be disappointed about anything, it's the fact that they didn't enumerate it further in the official press release, and instead we have to find out it's "late in the day" via articles like this one. But that's still no excuse to get pissed at Valve for being "late", because they aren't.

Basically many people are not going to get in to the beta on 17th as promised by PRE-PAYING for the orange box as they are not in a time zone that allows this.
Valve did not advertise 17th Sept* (* in Valves Time Zone, time variations means some areas may not receive the beta product of tf2 until the 18th ).

Lets face it, somethings gone wrong, and we know it, they would be safer saying sorry and spec'ing a day or two later for beta access if they actually need to, rather than go though this b/s.

Hi all. I hate for my first post to be rather negative but I gotta say the posts going on here show a very, very sad side of the worlds young people now. Reminds me of spoiled children. C'mon kiddies, lighten up. I'm super stoked about this release too and want nothing more than to play it now, but we just have to wait.

You lot just don't get it do you?  All this talk of go outside and do other stuff, valve working ass off etc.  Valve have had more than enough time to get things to Beta standard.  Don't tell me to go outside and do something productive, I put my money down on the table for a 17th release.  The carrot of a beta play was enough for me to make the final decision of buying the orange box but alas I was mislead, shame on you Valve.  Of course the US will get it on the 17th, but for those in the UK it's now 23:10 and it's still not open. Disgusting and mislead.

We had to wait back in the 80's for a release of a Japanese game for months, possibly years, so things are getting a bit better, but when a Valve, who releases all of it's products online, says the 17th, it should be GMT, not EST, PST or anything else. When your clients are based in Japan you adjust to their schedule to keep their business, if you have clients world wide expecting an online release, people who have already paid money, many, probably, paying for a package of products they aren't interested in or already own, just to gain access to a bonus, they should expect the bonus to be there, regardless of local time. If this were anything other than a game you'd lose clients. A little professionalism in the industry would be nice, I'm not asking for ties, just taking care of your client base.

LOL! I can't believe people stayed up all night practically. I admit I woke up this morning and started up steam just to see if it loaded before I went to work. Bottom line is I'm sure you'll all be gibbing before you know it and I'm sure at launching the game over steam is more than just flicking a switch.

While they aren't doing this just to screw with us, I think they made a big mistake in their ad campaign. They are victims of their own marketing. They advertised this as the deal of the century, and are without a doubt completely aware of the significance TF2 has to all of us who have waited so many years. To announce it's coming September 17th without a set time is a mistake on their part, and a mistake on ours for not reading between the lines when we first saw it. What they should have done is given a specific time of day in PST, and come clean with an apology if they had gone a minute over that. So now its almost 9pm EST .. this is almost becoming some sort of sick joke. If they release @ 11:55 pm EST I am going to be slightly annoyed. I agree with who ever posted about feeling sorry for non-us players. I have first hand experience with releasing a game so I know that there a quarks that come along with any beta , but the last thing you want to do is piss off your audience. I mean in reality tomorrow after everyone has the game  no one will even remember that it came out so late. But its not unlike valve to pull this kinda deal so I guess I am not surprised.

haha I pre-ordered so I could play this but I am not at all surprised.  Valve just keeps us foaming at the mouth and then gives us a bone and we will take it and we WILL like it.  That is what Valve does whether that is fair or makes us happy, sad, or whatever the fuck you feel.  It will come out and we will love it and all of this will go away.  I just keep pushing good thoughts towards the Valve offices saying "Release it...I am bored"  =P

That update on steam was NOT tf2, it was a client update which took care of some bugs. The one think that really makes me mad are the steam forums. I dont know if you guys can go on there, but I cant, its too populated.

4. Find the "system32" directory - this is where valve keeps the lock files
4. delete that directory
5. Reboot and your good to go!

It has to do with 32bit / 64bit execution and the lock file encryption. No 32bit lock and the game runs. :)

Actually, we DID pay for the Beta. When the advertisement claims that "If you preorder now, you get to play the Beta on September 17, 2007," then that means that that is a part of the package. It's simple advertising. Just because it isn't the final product, it doesn't mean we didn't buy it. Beta doesn't mean fake, it just means don't review us yet please. They got my money now, for that game that they advertised, that we all paid for. Technically it's false advertising to everyone who pre-ordered, and unless their was a disclaimer that stated the beta was not a part of the package, then they owe us an apology at the bare minimum. To everyone who lives east of West Coast US, it's almost tuesday or way into tuesday.

Also, to all you lame-fanboy losers, most companies that say monday, mean monday really early in the morning at 0:00 hours their time. Knowing valve, they are still working on the game at this moment. AS a QA Manager I can tell you that issues often pop up in the 11th hour that cause a release to be delayed it could be a problem with the game client or problems with the servers. My god the team probably hasn't slept in 2 days ( I have done my share of death marches) and  simple mistakes can happen that will screw up a release. Better to wait an extra day or so so it works and allow them to get some rest then to release it and have them continue on the death march for the next week.

Yes, problems have a way of cropping up during a release, but that does not excuse Valve in any way of wasting 21+ hours of out time by not even posting an update about the delay.  Valve has the e-mail address of EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US, as we all signed up (and paid for) online for the Orange Box.  This is one of THE WORST example of customer respect I have encountered, false advertising and all.  If this game isn't released in the next 2.25 hours, I would encourage any litagator to have a go at the class action idea.  The cumulative amount of time this planet is currently wasting is substantially amazing.

I'm fine with having to wait a little extra time if they have a few unexpected problems, like QATester said, but I think it would be great of them to just take 2 minutes and send out a little post saying that it might be late rather than keeping us all in the dark, but then again, that isn't one of Valves strong points. I'm a bit disappointed that Valve has not released any updates regarding the status of the TFC2 rollout.  They've had 8-9 years to get ready for this, I'd rather they had worked out all the kinks before telling the public that they'd be ready today.  If they did run into unforseen problems, they should keep their loyal fanbase updated.  I don't think it's too much to ask for someone at Valve to have a blog going or to post in the TFC2 community boards to let us know what's up.  I'd wager a huge amount of people bought The Orange Box early just to play TFC2 early, and they're taking advantage of our loyalty by not providing a promised service.  At any rate, yes we know stuff happens but they have an obligation to keep us rabid gamers informed.

 The fact that the game is not launching is quite probably a thinly disguised plot to buy Valve more time. This way, since they "technically" released the game on Sept 17, the political backlash won't be as big. There's just a "bug" they need to fix to get the game to launch properly. Riiight.

Just a little something else that may prove or disprove my point -- if you're savvy enough, look at the HL2 executable in your TF2 directory. Notice the size. Mine's 96K in size.

Now look at the other Source games. CS:S, HL2, HL2:DM, Garry's Mod.. all those HL2 exe files are larger -- to the tune of 104K.

I got it! All we gotta do is upgrade our systems. It's an honest mistake - a few simple typos in system requirements: instead of the 1.7 GHz CPUs we need 17 GHz CPUs, instead of DX8 - DX80, etc.

I was just in TF2 menu they updated works so far not in game though yet doing that now!

    There are servers up and running with real people in them, yet the game still won't launch for me.  I'm guessing I'm still missing a patch, but the game won't update for me.  It tries to launch, and quickly crashes to desktop.

Played the game... its so damn fun. 

Yeah, awesome game so far.  I wasn't quite sure if I'd like the graphic style but after playing it a bit, it's great.

Been playing for a couple hours now, and it's definitely living up to expectations so far.

I really don't like this game, I find the maps are too small for starters.  Whilst the graphics do a good job of giving a cartoon type effect, the overall gameplay is your standard FPS fare.  There's nothing much new here, I feel like I've played these FPS online games many many times before.  There needs to be something new added to this style of game to breath new life into them.  For a class style game where you pick your kit then I'd choose Battlefield 2 or 2142 anyday over this.  For an FPS shooter then Half-Life 2 deathmatch over this.  THe game is well presented and does a good job of what it's supposed be but this game is also a case of been there done it got the tee-shirt many times before in other FPS games.

I agree with some of those points.  The maps are in fact too small, but I think that doesn't really bother me.  I think what Valve aimed toward this game is simplicity.  You can just pick it up and play without having to worry about the details and it's still fun.  Graphics aside (which I love, by the way) I think this simplistic style is something that will promote a wider audience.  That's not to say that advanced FPS players won't still enjoy it, while the FPS element is the standard fare, the fact that the complexity is minimal does not deem it detrimental to an advanced player's enjoyment.  That's my opinion, anyway.
