I've read it just now as I don't have anything better to do and I have to say, well done. You summed up the situation very well and I couldn't agree more (except to nitpick on a few points). I applaud this work, maybe will you think about doing more of these summaries about perhaps other things. Correcting a few typos as well would be nice (steam forums users are complaining... not to please them but it would be a sensible improvement), although I am not in the best position to say it. Also, Steam Forums make me sad too I liked the comments about the pyro and how you integrated about all the (good) suggestions posted in our forums (most by you also) My opinion on this is : "Good work Chro."

That mod on the steam forums is a moron.

I might disagree or nitpick on some of the finer points, but all in all, Chro I agree with much of what you have to say about class balance and direction for this game.
Unlocks should be available to anyone given a set amount of time to make any sense in competitive.
I VERY much agree with your sentiments concerning the engineer, with the exception of the wrench replacement. Passive defensive area denial is too narrow of a field for the engineer to be relegated to, yet this is the only role that the sentry is optimized for. Your sentry replacement is an interesting idea.
I'd say more but it's late. I'm surprised Chro, you have a lot of very valid points on the game. My personal issues with you is your over-authoritative (perhaps a tad arrogant) arguing style, but at the same time, I find myself agreeing on the facts, most of the time.
This is well presented, and I'd hope Valve listens.

Thanks for an epic essay I shall be reading after finals ALL WEEK LONG.

You always say the game should be designed for the competitive community, so surely the best players would be the best representative of this demographic
You state that most good Scouts pick the original Scattergun, and that most good Snipers pick the original Rifle. However, you give nothing but praise to the Huntsman while complaining about the FaN.
If the best players aren't using a weapon, then, at that point, aren't you designing a weapon for less skilled players?
Sorry, I'm just not sure if I'm interpreting how you want the game to be changed correctly

I liked it. I'm not a competitive player, (or a PC player for that matter) so my opinions on the specific points probably don't matter much, but it seemed very well thought out and I liked most of your suggestions. I especially like the idea of freeing up Engineers. I don't know how many times I've tried to build a teleporter to help our offense (which usually ranges from weak to non-existent on map like 2Fort or Hydro) just to have my gun, dispenser, and entrance sapped and the intel taken. However, there were a couple of composition things that bothered. There were a lot of typos and grammar errors, which bugged the snot out of me since everything was so well thought out. I also thought the tone could have been more formal, but that's more of a preference. I was never really sure about your audience either. I know you sent it to Valve, but it seemed directed more at forum goers. Shouldn't be an issue if you if introduced it like you did here, but it would probably make it hard to read for the guys at Valve. Overall, good work. The fact that you actually went through with an 18 page paper (I thought my 10 page research paper last semester would never end) is an achievement in itself. And for that little comment about how your paper was longer than most students' now, you try to write a ten page paper about Edith Wharton and analysis of her works.

The thing is the Huntsman actually takes more skill to use because of the fact it isn't hitscan. It's actually easier to use the Rifle at a high level of play, The Huntman has its uses but it would require a high amount of precision and practice to ever use it effectively.(It has potential) And the FaN while not many I've seen quite a few more scouts in competitive play using it. To the actual 18 pages, I agree for the most part. Somethings I might do differently, but this is my first FPS on PC I've played competitively so I think you would know more on balancing then I. Good job on it Chro, just fix some of the typos and it will be completely good to go. Also I made a thread on the Gotfrag forums if you want to link it in your original post. http://www.gotfrag.com/tf2/forums/thread/401807/

Interesting read.
Some real good ideas overall. Personally, I hate how "unelegant" some of the alternates you composed were.
It's more of an aesthetic thing for me, but when I see "40% firing speed increase, 30% reload speed decrease, 20% movement speed decrease" all slapped onto one weapon in order to balance it it bothers me.
It's the reason I loved the elegance of the blutsauger and backburner but hated the wall of text that the FaN employed.
Just a small qualm in a sea of respectable ideas.
Nice work, man.
