Well, I've gone wireless since I moved back home, after getting used to direct cable at uni. And, as I expected, my ping increased. But I didn't expect it to go from 5 at uni to 210 in the same server when wireless. All servers respond with a ping increase of about 200ish. Obviously wireless isn't helping matters, but is there anything I could test or tweak before I can just accept I have shitty as f**** internet?

This is also your cue to gloat Drake.

Check out your signal strength. If it's poor, change to a different channel.

Try using a network cable to connect directly to your house's router, just for an hour or so, and compare the ping - that will let you know whether it's your internet connection, or your wireless responsibile for the ping (though it'll likely be a combination of the two).

Go to a dos box (start, run, "cmd.exe") and type "tracert 111.111.111.111" (replace the 111.111.111.111 with the IP of a TF2F server) - see what those look like.

I had to do the same thing when I got home... wireless is a POS. But its most likely your internet connection, not your wireless, that causes that big increase. The wireless connection will just make the lag more noticeable.

My ping rose as well, but it wasnt as drastic as your increases. First off, what wireless card are you running? USB wireless cards are prone to driver issues (most are based off a Realtek chip, which is known for its driver issues), particularly with latency (ping). See if there is a newer driver avaliable for your wireless card.

I ended up running a cable out the window and in another window near my router. Thats how I solved my problem.

Yeah, biggest problem I've found with wireless is going to be channel interference from other wireless devices, particularly cordless phones.  One of those anywhere in the neighborhood is going to wipe your wireless clean.  A router with auto channel capability is helpful, but you'll still get dropped or get lousy ping just from the phone being on.

I live in an apartment building, and my wireless will take the occasional 15 minute vacation.  When I find the asshole in the building with the cordless phone, there will be blood.
