Just a small bit of writing; decided to give some tips on how to deal with Demomen and Spies and the like, along with the concept of Tiered SG defense. Meant it to be a proper placement guide suggesting good and uncommon places to put Sentry Guns, but since we already have 2-3 guides on that its probably not all that needed.

Anyways, to the content:

Sentry Guns and You:

Help your Sentry Gun to help us to help you to help us all

If you’re reading this guide, you’re probably playing as an Engineer in TF2 or contemplating playing an engineer. Either way, you’re curious to know some generally good places or notes on where to put your sentry.

Before you get started though, it is highly recommended you read the following guides written by C4Cypher from teamfortress2fort.com (who is probably the most awesome Engineer around), detailing the styles of play available for an engineer, as well as teaching the all important way of the Ninja-Engineer.

The Way of the Ninja Engineer  *Must Read*:

http://www.teamfortress2fort.com/forums/t/WayoftheNinja-5912.aspx

The Assault Engineer’s Manifesto *Must Read*

http://www.teamfortress2fort.com/forums/t/TheAssaultEngineersManifesto-3955.aspx

First and foremost, identify what style of play you prefer: are you a turtle, preferring guard your SG like your first-born baby? Do you like to go to the fronts and support your teammates? Or do you like to go Lone Wolf and kill everything in sight? Identify how you want to play first, read the guides above – they can give better and far more experienced tips on how best to play an engineer class. What we discuss here though, is the good and bad things when it comes to SG placement.

Before you proceed further, as a disclaimer know this: Nothing in this guide is 100% accurate. Sentry Gun (SG) Placement is an art form in itself, and if you play your cards right you could put a SG out in the open or the shittiest place and still come out on top because of how you handled the situation.

What this guide does do is provide tips on how to deal with the engineer’s two greatest enemies (the Demoman and the Spy) as well as suggest an optimal system for Sentry Gun placement in Tiers.

The Demoman

The Demoman is probably the greatest threat to an Engineer and his Sentry – more so than the spy. A Demoman’s grenades let him bounce explosives to any location while remaining out of Line of Sight (LoS). His stickies, in particular, are devastating against any target – one can seriously hurt, two on the other hand, is certain death to anything below a soldier or heavy, which includes your sentry gun.

They are the direct counter to the Engineer and if you’re going to do well you need to deal with them. But how can one exactly deal with a Demoman? The answer is varied, depending on your play style. The best answer to dealing with Demomen that I’ve found is Mobility.

If you know there’s more than 1 or 2 Demomen around, stay constantly on the move. Flank around and let him get his attention on the sentry – then use your shotgun to engage, or better yet, slap the bugger upside the head with your wrench if you can get close enough.

Even if he does notice you, kee

the bridge on 2fort isn't that ideal for sentry, demoman/rockets/snipers can easily take them out. i much prefer to go right up their wall in the middle and use the right click to turn the sentry 180 degrees, so the weapon is right against the wall facing our own base. i find that the better than the corners cos they can be easily taken out by rockets.

also try and stand on your equipments, like SGs to make it harder for spies to backstab you, plus it's probably safer too cos you won't get shot by your own SG!

sometimes it's good to hide a SG in a corner around from the enemy, you engage them and then run away in another direction - drawing them towards your SG... most of the time they'd run after you trying to get an easy engi kill, but they're actually running into your trap. it only works a couple of times. if it wasn't blown up - sometimes it's handy to self-destruct and move it elsewhere cos the enemy would expect the sentry still being in the same place, you'll have it around the same spot to surprise them again. only trouble is, you need to work very quick and run around screaming 'metal, metal i need metal!' lol.

good guide

Not to mention putting sentries underwater at 2fort...I officially hate sentries being put there when I'm having a bad day as a scout (Somehow falling into the water while trying to run across the roof on top of the bridge ><

You should be. Thanks to your guide, I'm now a wrench ninja. Been wrenching everything from Pyros to Soldiers to Heavies, Medics, Snipers and most importantly - spies. Thanks to you, my wrench is now infamous on the VStreet server - as it should be!

Glad you folks liked the guide though. I was going to do some pictures of sentry spots and the like, but considering the stuff that's already out on those spots, its probably not worth the hassle.

@Fungineer: Agreed. The bridge isn't all that useful, but I find it a great surprise spot effective against scouts and charging soldiers. Its also pretty useful against soldiers that jump down, see it and then dont notice you standing behind ready to wrench them. Thanks for the tip on standing on sentries though - saved me life more than once!
