Meet the Engineer, one of nine playable character classes in Team Fortress 2:

From:
http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=987&cc=US
Name:
Engineer
Role: Defense
Weapons: Shotgun / Pistol/ Wrench
Contraptions: Turret / Dispenser / Teleporter
Favorite Equation:

This amiable, soft-spoken good ol’ boy from tiny Bee Cave, Texas loves barbeque, guns, and higher education. Natural curiosity, ten years as a roughneck in the west Texas oilfields, and eleven hard science PhDs have trained him to design, build and repair a variety of deadly contraptions.

BUT... Apparently his favorite equation is for emulating real-life lighting. (slide 32)

Wow, when I started reading the parts about lighting and shading explained by the equations, it just went completely over my head.

Wow do you mean math has an application outside of school. Who would have thunk it?
Seriously does anyone on this site understand the math completely. The only part I get is that they make the lighting less extreme and emphasize the lighting on a character as a whole.

3D rendering is one of the primary uses of Uber Maths in programming.  Heavy Calc, Trig, Quarternions, and so much vector and matrix math as to give one butthurt thinking about it.  Physics modeling is in the same boat.

Dam, even after taking all the classes my school gave on graphics that all shot over my head.

QFT

My hobby (and job) is graphics programming. Let me tell you, those books are graphics theory are a doozy. You can get away with just a cursory understanding of calculus (if you don't want to do independent research), but trig, matricies, vectors, quats, linear, and numerical methods are all in a days work.

Its actually not that hard (coming from a kid who nearly failed most of his university math courses) if you spend some time with it. Its all basic math and algebra, you just gotta buckle up.

When those slides came out a while ago I looked at that equation and I was like, "Wow."  Then a while later I saw the information from the Meet The Engineer video and noticed the exact same equation.  Heh.
