I play pyro alot i have about 112 hours on it, i was just curious if anyone thinks that the fire axe is even useful anymore, compared to gaurenteed crits with fire for the axetinguisher.

with the ability to airblast people with the regular flamethrower its easy to set up axetinguish kills too. so far the only use for keeping the fire axe is to kill other pyros when you have the flare gun equipped. Even then it probably isnt a good idea because its just as easy to use the flamethrower to kill them as opposed to fire axing them.

anyhow just wanted to see some input on the two weapons

thanks in advance

The fireaxe is useless now. Never use it, much in the same way one should never use the bonesaw.

The flamethrower is your melee weapon. It's powerful, gives afterburn and crits.

The fireaxe is often unweildy, does chunks of damage, no afterburn.
The axtinguisher crits when the opponent is on fire at the expense of less damage and no regular crits.

But you have your flamethrower for close range. Even against pyros, the pyro with the flamer will kill the one with the axe. Unless the flamer is an idiot.

In other words, axtinguisher should always be used. Unless you're melee duelling in a special melee server that is.

The regular axe is completely out matched by the axetinguisher. A normal melee weapon is somewhat useless to a man with a flame thrower and shotgun. If there’s a person in melee range, you have better tools then the axe. The only edge the axe has is its function underwater and against other pyros, both of which are solved by the shotgun.

The axetinguisher, however, does not serve the role of a melee weapon. It kills people faster, increasing pyros’ efficiency and killing power.

I think the old axe is useful.  It's for killing other Pyros.  Axetinguisher is for killing Soldiers.

The shotgun and flamethower are both better at killing other pyros.

Meh. The fireaxe should never be looked at as just a weapon by itself. You need to use it in conjunction with other weapons. Example on how to pick your weapons follows:

The flamer and BB are going to decide what you will use. The BB means if someone is ambushed, they are dead. Even if there are 5 other people, still dead. Unless they are lucky they will die. The downside is in direct combat you are at a disadvantage. The flamer however, is ok in ambushing but dominate in direct combat. While ambushing is fine, groups will take you down easily.

Flare and shotgun is more due to personal preference. Shotgun for direct combat, flare for scaring opponents off or potshots.

Axtinguisher is a great choice. It is an almost insta-kill on anything that is on fire. Without the BB equiped you can still unlock some of the pyro's insta-kill abbilities. The fireaxe does about 70dmg on TFTrue. I find it very useful as a quick chop can take out that soldier running for the hp pack, or the heavy defended the point at the last second. Puff n' Stings are what makes the axes more useful. It's faster to comp then chop, than it is to comp than flame. I find this very useful when dealing with scouts or demos.

As you see the axe still has some uses, and it's unfair to look at them as seperate weapons. The axes are there to compliment your other choices.

The fireaxe does not complement any weapon choices.

Whatever flamethrower you have, the axtinguisher will always complement it.

Like I said, your flamer is your melee weapon. Even against pyros.

I cannot see a single reason why you would want an axe over an axe-tingusher.

Well i dont understand your position mibbok if we're talking about complimenting weapons. what is the point in taking the fire axe over the weapon that can kill just about anything in 1 hit. and heavies in two hits? i just dont see a contest.

From my experience the best weapons to have are

Flamethrower
Shotgun(for small maps, flare for like gravelpit and such)
and the Axetinguisher.

Because you can use the air blast to knock people up after burning them so they can run away, pull out the axetinguisher. and kill them.

I was just wondering if there was something i was missing that maybe the fire axe would be good for. It may be a decent melee weapon but the axetinguisher just completely blows it out of the water for efficiency.

A "quick chop" Even though it faster and safer to just use your main? The Heavy defending the point at the last second, which is better? Maybe getting 70 damage if not seen untill close, or burning him from a further range? Getting more damage?

Also, I use the BackBurner, and yet I still have many Axtinguisher kills. I mean, if you use the Axtinguisher, you can get the crits to kill one guy before he can react, and axtinguish one other before the react and still make a getaway. So Puff 'n' Sting isn't the definitive for making axes useful, there are many other tactics for the Axtinguisher.
