I've been arguing with some guys over on the ps3 community about the usefulness of the various classes in comp play. I've always considered the 360 and PS3 versions to be basically identical, so I come here to ask you guys how classes fit into your competitive atmosphere. The ps3 scene, by and large, insists that the only classes worth using in a match are demos, sollys, medics, and engies. I argue that every class is useful, depending on the map and the skill of the player utilizing the class. So I come to you to help make, or break, my argument: what classes are used in your comp play most often? Are scouts used, effectively? Are heavies and snipers ever used? Spies or pyros?

The thing that bothers me the most about this whole controversy in particular is scout play. Obviously, scouts are very useful in pc comp play. My opponents, while recognizing this, hold that scouts are too difficult to play effectively on the consoles, and thus aren't worth playing in matches. I recognize this argument to be completely untrue, but without evidence from matches and scrims to back it up, it's difficult to refute. So I ask of the 360 competitive community, how often and how effectively are scouts used in scrims and matches?

The 360 ladder has a class limit rule..  We can only have one medic, one demo, and 2 of any other class..  So if we play an 8v8 we have to diversify classes a bit more..  I've seen every class played competitively on the 360..  Engies aren't played as much on push maps so we can have room for scouts.. There are scouts on the 360 that are pretty dominant..  I think most of the players in the competitive scene play multiple classes well, because you see a lot of class switching depending on the situation..  I think anyone that has accurate aim and can handle the speed can make a good scout on the console..

If you want to see some 360 match gameplay of clans. type in Iconic vs TFT in youtube you will see match gameplay. PS3 clan version needs more restrictions teams are just demoman spamming at points. I do think CEVO rule might help the PS3 crowd. I only say this because i use to play the PS3 version till i switch to xbox

I appreciate the links, das, but the scout in those vids wasn't a very good example of good scout play :|

And I rather forgot about class limits. If there are scouts that are pretty dominant, that is great to know, but the fact that you have class limits would probably just be interpreted as it being necessary to "force" people to play less effective classes... sigh.

Force people? If the PS3 people would say that, they're just silly. Plenty of people on the xbox main every class from scout to spy to sniper, and I'm sure they'd play 6v6 if they didn't want those additional classes.

And Scout is a big part of comp play on the xbox.

Did someone say Force? ....oh.

To answer the orignal question: scouts, heavies, and spys are definitely used. Snipers and pyros I think are less common, but there are good ones that do compete. It depends on the map of course, and the size of the teams. I'm new to the clan scene but those are my observations.

p.s. class limits are a good thing

Das I never realized you where CHOPPA, hell to think I just randomly met you one day too.

Also in all honesty there are people on the 360 that are good if not great with almost any class. Hell we even have some rape-tastic snipers.
Though I hate snipers because in most random public matches within 2 min of getting one sniper half of each team decides to do their part and snipe to glory.

Not to be rude but when a clan is running one medic, engie, two soldiers and four demoman, it gets  boring since there are no updates where weapons can blow up the stickies on the point. Alll you got to do is have two demo sticking a point the other 2 sticking walkways, it makes the game boring and dull. i've seen some awesome scouts on the 360, crazy snipers that i want to punch in the face at times haha.

Fan,
Sorry about that granary game that one day. My team was practicing but thanks for sticking it out though.

Without class limits, there would be 360 clans that would run 4 demos and 4 medics to have an endless stream of ubers and spam..  Lame..

It is lame, and that is currently what the Ps3 scene is like. Two medics and six explosive classes is not uncommon. Throw in an engie or two on defensive maps and that is essentially what all matches consist of. I appreciate the input, guys, I find it interesting to know that despite similar controls and identical circumstances you can go beyond the four classes we're stuck with.
At any rate, it doesn't seem like they plan to change anything, and I'll hopefully be moving to the pc soon...
