Anyone have experience with DoW2? It's on sale on Steam this weekend for $25, which is a pretty nice price cut.

I have, it's a good game, but it feels rushed. IIRC it actually was due to money constraints. Still, it beats the crap out of many other RTSs that I have played. The campaign is pretty repetative, though there are few misions that aren't "Go here, Kill Boss" but they aren't common. If you get it it should be for the multiplayer, which is nice, particularly if you don't like base building, but the balance is a bit off here and there and things don't feel as visceral as the first DOW and there is a pitifully small number of maps. It gets patched a lot, however, so you can't say Relic doesn't care for the customers.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Yeah, if you don't already have DOW 1 then you should get it instead.

The original DoW and its expansions make for a much deeper game than DoW 2, although 2 strives for something a little different in RTS.

If you're a big fan of  RTS, or even just the Warhammer Universe, I can imagine you getting a lot more out of a set of original DoW titles, both offline and on. There is also a huge modding fanbase for DoW, some of them are completely full mods with different Factions and everything.

No. DoW2 sucks ass.

Get DoW 1 (and expansions). It's a much better game.

Although if you want an RTS game that is similar to the DoW series, I would suggest Company of Heroes (I think it is also on sale). I have both games, and CoH has entertained me far longer than DoW.

CoH has more polish, more effects, and better maps. I also feel that the gameplay is more fun. The only reason I would get DoW is because I am a fan of outer space RTS games that require more micro than CoH. However, if that is what you want then just wait for starcraft.

A little note: If you are in it for the spectacle then DOW 1 can't really be compared to DOW 2 or CoH. The graphics may not be as high quality as the others but its a lot more visceral and gritty, and in niether game can you have a giant daemon or a tank with 11 guns or just teleport your base into the enemies, or some other equally absurd superweapon. Also the finishing moves (called sync kills) are sometimes really awesome in DOW 1 if you stick around to watch.

DOW II doesn't feel as visceral and everything look sorta plastic, and CoH is a WWII game so it doesn't have space marines beheading orks with chainswords.
