Hey all.  I'm long time lurker, rare poster.  My main class is engineer, which is why I want to ask something I have discovered over my travels.  My playstyle is similar to C4Cypher's, though with a bit more emphasis on buildables (and probably less skill), so I try to have all the buildables up at least 75% of the time.  I have played for a respectable 200 hours as engineer, so I know what I'm doing most of the time.  My sentries net me a decent amount of kills for an engineer, and the teleports do wonders for my team (even if i have to remind them to use it), but the dispenser, despite how it appears in text, doesn't see too much use in the game other than metal.  The dispenser heals 10/15/20 hp a second, is not limited to one person at a time like the medic is, replenishes ammo, but cannot move.  From this, it would seem that many people would use the dispenser about as much as they would a medic.  Sadly, with my experience, I see maybe 2 people a minute using the dispenser, while watching the medic overheal the entire team just 10 meters away.  The average point contribution from my dispenser per games comes to about 1, maybe even 2 on full servers (if you didnt know, 600 points of dispenser healing = 1point).

I'm not asking for the dispenser to give more points.  I'm not saying that it sucks or is great.  I'm not saying that dispensers should overheal.  I'm simply saying that people don't seem to use the dispensers I build.  In your opinion, is it underused, overrated, or that people use them all the time? (if you use the last arguement, please bring evidence)

i don't know why everyone has c4cypher on a pedestal.  every time I see him in game he runs in a straight line at people with his wrench.
I don't think following his strategy is a good idea.

oh and dispenser is good enough imo

Actually, I've only seen him in game once, and truth be told I saw more wisdom in his posts than in his playing.  But he is certainly no pub engineer.  Also, there aren't that many great engineers.

It's all dependant on the placement of the dispensers.

If you've got a dispenser right behind the front lines and around a corner for people to duck out and heal/reload, then that's a dispenser that's going to see alot of use.

If you've got a dispenser on the back lines for you to load up on metal safely, then don't expect many people to be running back and forth so much as if it was closer to them.

I haven't played engineer in a while, but I do use dispensers to heal if they're placed conveniently.

Dispensers are really useful if they're near enough to the front so that people can heal up and still be a second away from the action, or still see the action (if the dispenser is placed behind a wall so that they can look around while still getting healed). If it's near the back, of course it will be useless, there's no one hurt nearby.

I find it worth mentioning that dispensers are also the hardest buildable to kill once it's up. It can seriously take a lot more splash damage than a sentry gun. Of course, if you get rolled, the despenser is an easy point to the other team.
I find the biggest barrier the dispenser has to wider play is the amount of time it takes to set up. TF2 wiki doesn't seem to have the dispenser set up time on it, but it's defiantly at least twice as long to build up as the sentry. The sentry is really quick to set up, and provides some fire support, which is always good. The dispenser takes twice as long to set up, and give health based on how close you are to it: situational at best. If the dispenser was faster to set up, and really able to get help to the teammates who needed it faster, than it would be experimented with more like the sentry gun is.
