Does anyone here connect to Xbox Live over wireless and not use the Microsoft wireless adapter? Specifically, I'm talking about something like this. I was considering using the dd-wrt firmware to create a cheap wireless solution, only to come to find out that my cheap router was the wrong revision to work.

I wanted to get some information from any others who may have successfully gotten this setup working, or maybe something similar.
  • what is/are a/some cheap, known-to-work router(s).
  • what is the connection quality like for wireless
Currently, I am following the ever-popular linksys wrt54g router on ebay for around $35, which is looking likely to be my choice, because it is the most supported router for that firmware. But I would like to find something even cheaper if it were possible.

Can anyone provide insight into this topic? Thanks.

i dont have a problem....honestly, what you can do is just get a belkin wireless bridge. it'll do the same thing with less firmware hax and a pretty good price. i got mine for 20 bucks about a year ago.

I use the cheapest wireless bridge I could get my hands on. Works fine. It used to have a problem where it would forget which encryption protocol to use when I turned the bridge off, but since the NXE update, even that hiccup is gone.

Yea, a cheap wireless bridge works just as well. I used the Linksys WMB54G Wireless-G Music Bridge up until I switched providers and gave the bridge to a friend who could use it more.
Wireless bridges are actually mentioned in small print somewhere in the xbox manual, but they would prefer you spend $100 on their usb nic instead .

For a while I used this wireless music bridge , and it sucked, it would lag whenever I would shoot, in total I probably played 2 full games and had about 100 some lag-outs.
So I switched to using my Macbook and that worked for the most part. It sucks to set up, due to weird IP address codes, but it seems to handle the wireless pretty well. If you have a laptop I would suggest looking online on how to get that to work because then you wouldn't have to buy a brige. If you have a macbook I can probably help you that way.
But I rencently changed to the Xbox wireless adapter, and it eclipses everything else I have tried. So I would just suggest saving up money for it, because in my oppinion its worth it.

The only problem I remember having with it for the 6 months or so that I used it was that it didn't like being near my speakers. Outside of that, I didn't notice any more lag than I normally would joining random games.
I've used my laptop to connect before too. It's very easy with a PC since all you have to do is bridge the connection, but I believe you have to use an ethernet crossover cable, or at least that was the only cord that worked for me.
Ultimately the 360's USB wireless adapter does outperform most, but I should hope so considering the price and that it was solely designed to work with the console.

All of the wireless bridge answers I received sound like they would take care of my problem.

But, I realized that in my OP, I didn't mention that I wanted to hook other equipment up as well, like my mythTV box. So I realized, I would need either a router acting as a bridge, or a bridge and switch to provide more than one ethernet outlet. So far, the prices I've seen have both possibilities costing about the same, so I guess it will come down to if I find a deal at some point.

Thanks for all of the helpful information everyone.

You can get a cheap fonera wireless router and flash it with dd-wrt firmware. They're usually about $30 with occasional special deals and freebies.
https://shop.fon.com/FonShop/shop/US/ShopController?view=product&product=PRD-001

Also if you know someone with a fonera (like myself) they can send you an invite for a Fonera for $20 and you can add an optional 7dB directional antenna for $9.
