Far Cry 2 is a terrible game. Period.
It's good as eye-candy tho, but the gameplay is flawed at best.
You got 3 different types of missions;
1. Usual story mission, where you have to go somewhere to kill someone. You will get a call from your buddy, who wants you to destroy something. Afterwards, you must save your buddy.
2. Convoy, where there's a convoy of 3 cars driving around in circle, and you have to destroy the middle one. (armsdealer mission)
3. Assassin, where you have to kill somebody in the town, and then get away. ('broadcast tower' mission)
Between these missions, you will have to drive back an forth, and every 100 meters there's a military outpost, and every 100 meters you will have to fight usually 2 cars with militant dudes, and pick off a couple of turrets. Always the same ways, always the same places.
I've played through the whole game, and it never deviates from this pattern. Never! After a while it gets so repetative that you will take loooong detours just to avoid those damned outposts. ....and as that wasn't enough, through the game you will never get to free yourself fom that 'malaria', and you will have to do a sidemission to get more medicine quite often. This sidemission consist of driving past some outposts to get where you are heading, and then kill some guys, and deliver some passports.
I would warn you agains spending money on this game. It's not worth it.

Sidearm - Grenade Launcher (IEDs for convoys)
Primary - Sniper
Special - Saw or PKM
That was what I found to be most effective and versatile
