"Game is Unavailable"

I could join games, but as soon as it was done loading, instead of putting me in the game I would get an error message about the server not using the same class settings or something. I decided the reboot the program and see if the problem would disappear, and after downloading updates, TF2 now won't start up and gives me an error message that says "This game is currently unavailable. Please try again later."

What's wrong? Is Steam just making an update to the whole game?

A drastic measure would be to reinstall Steam.

The error message comes up when i try to start tf2. I can't start the game, much less restart it.

I tried exiting and reopening Steam, and it claims I still have a game running. If you meant restarting my computer, I don't want to do anything that would exit the Steam client artificially because that might make my problem work.

Plus, rebooting takes a long time because of all the programs that run on startup. I'd rather not have to do that unless there's no other option.

seriously. you could have solved this issue already. By not wanting to take the time to restart you are just wasting your time by posting on the forums. I mean really, which do you think takes longer??
 You don't need a billion programs starting at startup so disable some first. I've never got more than 10 things sitting on my system tray. If you do, you are wasting your computer's resources.

I use a program called AdvancedWindowsCare to manage startup items. It really reduces startup time. And as sishgupta said, reboot.

There is a whole steam support article about this, try doing all those things, it worked for me.

Just go to support.steampowered.com and type in "game currently unavailable".
