I'm generally a really poor sniper. I can get a couple of headshots, but they're usually lucky, and body shots get me most of my kills as sniper.
Today I tried something else - instead of following a player with my cursor and trying to headshot him, I got my cursor level with the player's head and then physically moved my player until my reticle crossed over the player's head. I did pretty damn good (by my standards), scoring ~45 headshots and 70 kills in total.
Now, I'm wondering...does anyone else do this? Is it a good or bad idea? Should I force myself to actually aim because it would be better in the long run?

I actually see a lot of snipers doing this especially when facing other snipers. It keeps your sniper moving while also putting you in position to kill. However, this tactic can be used against you because an enemy might know that you'll be slowly popping out and will be waiting for you. I think it all depends on personal preference and circumstances.
Whatever works for you.

You'll want to learn to aim with moving your dot and not your character.

I do that from time to time if I have EXTREMELY small distances to cover as it can help with some of the fine aim. I will say though against more experience snipers you will almost always lose the fight b/c the time it takes you to get the cursor to them they're already HS you 3 times. For me it's more useful in a sniper free spot (temporary or otherwise) against regular schmoes.

If it works for you, then it works for you. Everyone has their own little thing.

Although I am generally a terrible sniper, I whole-heartedly agree with Yoshi. If you weren't having success previously but something new you tried is working for you, keep practicing it and you'll only get better. Sniper is a precision and quick reaction class that not all people are capable of. The results will show what works for you and what doesn't.

Here a few tips hope it help: For killing other class: Line the crosshair up and use keybad to move left and right, let the enemy walk into the crosshair willingly Keep your distance. vs Sniper: Never walk slow out from corner, that's suicide, run out and zoom in and take a quickshot, strafe, and rezoom and shoot. NEver ever hold more than .5 second when sniping against a sniper. Some time it help to only strafe to the right since many people have the habit of walking to the left. You need alot of pratice, try to aim for head at all time, after a while your hand will have a mind of its own and automatically swing crosshair to head and get headshot . I recommand playing on Mach_4 for praticing sniper, there are alot of good sniper on there. You must develope quick reaction to be efficient sniper. Snipe other class and avoid enemy sniper until your good enough. Also, learn to snipe without zooming it is always good against charging pyro. NUmber ONE Tip!!!: DiSable the automatic zoom, it will get you kill. hope my tips help. and yes i forgot, make sure your resolution is high enough Smaller is harder, I recommand sensitivity of 5 for sniping. Snipe the medic is your second priority. Your first is to take care of the enemy sniper

I have played a lot of sniper, including most of my time on "sniper only" servers. While sniper only servers are not comparable to actual pl, ctf, or cp maps, the techniques are the same, and can be applied in every instance.
1) As if i need to reiterate an obvious point, but i will as a lot of people claim they just aim for the body, but seriously folks, aim for the head. Not only does it give you 2 points for a kill as opposed to 1, you also get a nifty little *ding* sound to go along with the shot. Also? 150 damage, AT LEAST, no charge necessary.
2) Know your enemy. Fighting another sniper a lot? Stop aiming for the body when 1 uncharged headshot will finish him instantly. Figthing a demo? Then it's ok to charge that body shot, no matter how much you damage him, a quick headshot will finish him off if your team hasn't already, and giving you a quick assist. Heavy annoying your team? Try a fully charged headshot...unless he's got a medic on him, it'll finish him off.
3) Don't stand still...ever. Charging up? KEEP MOVING! There's a reason why the sniper's taunt thanks all those wankers for standing still...cuz it makes easy work for an opposing sniper.
4) Work on strafing around without your scope up, the scope completely limits your view, and you have no idea what's coming from where with your scope up, and as an added bonus, you're much faster! You'll also notice if you take a couple uncharged shots that your bullets never stray off the center of your screen...when i first started, a little piece of paper scotch taped to my screen worked as a nifty crosshair, with practice, the need for it goes away, and pyros chasing you become easier to kill off the hip.
5) Your overall goal should be to strafe around scope down, quickly spot an opposing enemy bring the scope up and virtually instantaneously (if possible) take an uncharged shot at the head. For 5 of the 9 classes, it's an instant kill without medic's health boost (Scout, Engy, Medic, Sniper, Spy). For 2 more classes it knocks them down to 25 health (Pyro, Demo), which amounts to an extra half second charge if needed. Whether you shoot someone with a headshot that causes 150 damage or a headshot that causes 300 damage, if they have 125 health, they're dead either way.
6) The longer you strafe around with a fully charged shot, the more the opposing team begins to notice you and attempt to lob stickies, rockets, minigun fire, pipe bombs, flare gun shots, etc. So after you die, try somewhere new, don't keep running into the exact same spot time after time. And just because you know that opposing sniper doesn't ever move, don't think you're gonna get him the next time you spawn...if you show up in the same spot, he's gonna get you again 9 times out of 10. Try the other side of the battlements, try the lower level, the point is, try something DIFFERENT. I'd rather kill the medic running into my base healing the soldier and heavy than try and get that sniper camping me.
7) Kill the medic first. 'nuff said.
If you want to work on your sniper skills, look for some servers running some sniper only maps, 2fortsniper_tf2_f is the most common among them, but also look for dz_sniper or sniperz_ridge, those servers welcome new-comers, and most are willing to offer tips if you're so inclined to learn.

Valid tactic, not bad at all, but eventually if you wanna get good, you gotta learn how to snipe both ways, and use them depending on the situation, as said several times, this can be used against you, so it's better for taking out snipers looking at someone else and every other class besides other snipers. As you get good you'll learn how to take down everyclass (IE:Zigzaging scouts, just stay in place and shoot when they move into it, same for jittery medics who won't stand still, for heavies you have to move the crosshair to them manually, and so on) Good luck my friend.
