(i did see the demojump thread, but it was just some random questions and discussions. and after excessively jumping around as a demo i thought i might just give it a shot. me wanna post a guide too!

Greetings, Lads.

Welcome to my little edutaining course about the joys and pains of Stickyjumping. This covers all the basics, some advanced techniques and of course som great examples of what you can archieve by Stickyjumping. But lets not rush this all over, right? Let's that with the general idea:

1. Stickyjumping and you...

1.1 What is Stickyjumping?

You already might have heard of rocket jumping, a rather ancient, yet effective, technique using self-injuring ground attacks to create a momentum propelling you anywhere you desire (mostly upwards). The Demoman can perform an equal... well... a superior technique: Stickyjumping. You use your stickybombs to launch yourself up in the sky and with a little training you can land whereever you want.

1.2 The Stickylauncher

The device you want to use for that is the stickylauncher. Don't bother with the standard issue grenade launcher. It is not that good for jumping. You will find the stickylauncher on weapon slot 2. The launcher has an adjustable firing mode. When you tap the primary fire button (mouse1) you will launch a sticky. It will fly in an arc and stick to most things on impact. It however repels from doors, sentries, players and other moving world objects. The secondary fire button you can detonate any sticky that you shot so far. Holding down the primary fire button will charge your gun. On release or maximum charge it will launch a sticky further than usual. you can shoot them pretty far that way. You can deploy eight stickies at a time. as soon as you try to add a nineth one the first one you placed will detonate, the tenth will detonate the second and so on. so be careful when replacing them, those detonating single stickies will hurt you.

1.3 Your very first stickyjump

Unless you don't know how to do it in general here is a brief introduction of what you have to do:
1. Place a stickybomb on the ground
2. Get on top of the stickybomb
3. jump a little bit upwards, just a tiny tad
4. detonate
Easy, eh? Now watch yourself flying. You will go upwards quite fast, and after you landed you should be moderately hurt (depending on map).

1.4 Various Jumps

Depending on your position you can perform a variety of different jumps. The most common are the hi-jump and the forward-jump. The basic idea is as follows: take your sticky and your physical center. then draw an imaginary line through that... this will be the initial propelling direction of you. Gravity will of course pull you back down after some flying, so you have to calculate carefully. If you directly stand on the bomb and jump, then you will go up all the way. if you move a bit forwards, then the angle drops a bit. and if you are already a step away from it, it will propel you forward quite fast.
In mid air you can control your flight too. holding the strafe right button and turning clockwise (right) will make you change your direction to right (at least in older hl games). pressing backwards will make you stop flying forward (wtf). This is excellent for pinpoint landings.

1.5 One or two bombs?

This is a difficult question. Whilst one bomb gives you access to most areas, two bombs will get you even further and faster to your destination, even if that means you will take a lot of damage. If you might encounter enemies at your LZ, you should only use 1, if you can reach your destination with one bomb in the first place. If the area is somewhat clear or you need to go really far, use two.

1.6 The downsides of Stickyjumping

1.6.1 Health

Demomen have a standard maximum health of 175 points. thats quite average and stickyjumping will strip you a fair amount of that.

One custom map I really like is CP_Wolf.  Some nice jumps there are:

1.  1 bomb jump from respawn window almost all the way to the first CP.  Health pack in the building near where you land if you choose to get it instead of hopping on the point.
2.  In the corridor connecting the A and C cap points, jump left at an angle to get up onto the C cap point without pushing in toward the stairs.  (Warning:  there should always be a sentry up by the C point, but if it gets sapped, you can stand on C and bomb the entrance the defending team uses to get up there).
3.  Right after game starts, jump up to the platform going from Respawn to the B point, saving you a few seconds that might mean the difference between a level 2 and 3 sentry at your destination.  There's 2 health cans on the way to B so you'll recoup the health.

In granary,
if you run up the ramp of your respective side room leading to the elevated area of the mid point,
There is a small square section of the balcony in the space most immediate through the door of the sideroom,
if you place a sticky at the very edge of this square/ slightly wider area, you can sticky jump directly onto the raised balcony on the other side of the midroom without taking fall damage.

Defending in gravelpit, you can launch from one of the lower platforms of the c capture point tower to the very very top (above the control point itself) giving you a very detatched area to shell entrances from.

One incredible trick I learned while trying to get into C in Gravelpit while it's being actively defended is the sticky assault ... first you charge and launch four to seven stickies up into C ... then you put a single sticky outside the doorway from A (the one closest to the mini-barn in the middle) ... come running out of the doorway, jump ... and detonate the moment you reach the right point for a stickyjump up to C ... you'll stickyjump into C the moment the enemy gets a face full of brimstone.

Surprised nobody has mentioned this.
In 2fort you can directly launch yourself from your battlements to the enemies battlements, and if you're pro, to the enemy glitchpoint (if you're red.)

I've launched myself into enemy battlements plenty of times, but the "enemy glitchpoint" is new to me. Can you enlighten me on this, ¿por favor?

discovered a new spot this weekend.
Granary midpoint Red side. The 2 stack of containers. If you demojump against the left wall and aim for just above the little outcropping/pully device you can stand up there and if you aren't noticed,  launch stickies at every single entry/exit point of that room. You are however completely vulnerable and will most likely die if you jump down, but it is still pretty cool to get up that high.

my favorite stickyjumping is on a duel_duel2 server running low-grav.  It's kind of ridiculous and gets old, but being able to stickyjump ALL the way to the top of the map is cool.  And if no one sees you, you can rain death on the enemy spawn from 100+ feet in the air.

On the official maps, I think gravel pit provides the most stickyjump opportunities.  If defending, you can stickyjump into the corridor outside BLU's spawn and booby trap the gate.   You can jump onto the roof at cap B.  You can stickyjump straight to cap C from the lowest level.  There are lots of shacks and buildings at cap A to play around on.

you would be surprised but well has some amazingly useful jump spots as well. Mainly shortcuts and not necessarily secrets, but you  can get across the map right quick if you know how. Also it allows you to sneak past some defenses if you don't go through the normal traffic route.
