Hitboxes & You

So I've come back to the game after a 6 month break, and I've noticed more and more that the way I used to snipe just does not work anymore. I have been playing fps for a long time and the hit detection in tf2 seems the most inconsistent of any I've played.

I assume this is due to the speed of characters and how little leeway the hit detection has but after coming back I will shoot some directly in the head and it simple does not register (not talking about people standing still, mostly fast strafing targets). And I have become more and more aware that hitboxes seem to trail behind targets rather then in front as depicted by showhitboxes.

No matter what interp I use or what setting I tweak head shots are always more consistent when I shoot for the back of the head, even having to wait maybe 20ms before I fire. This largely makes the way I snipe and have for years ineffective, and I was wondering if any of you have noticed similar things and have found any way for the hitboxes to more closely resemble the actual head. Even delaying what I see by some 20 ms or so would probably solve the issue but no cvars seem to be able to do this and I am unsure about drivers/external programs.

tldr; Do you feel that aiming for where the head JUST was more effective, and is there any way to fix it

I agree with you completely.

As someone who's been sniped, I've noticed I'm getting headshotted after going behind cover.

As a sniper, all the shots that should be hitting on strafing targets, aren't...and all the shots that should be missing are getting headshots.

There's something screwy going on, anyway.

The hitboxes in TF2 has always been a bit dodgy=/ ...Every time I snipe, I will get multiple cases of my bullets hitting their faces (shown by blood on their faces), and no hit whatsoever. Quite annoying. Also, with hitscan weapons, I seem to hit more often if I aim just slightly behind the running victim.

This isn't just TF2 though, and the TF2 hitboxes are a great deal better than, for instance, Battlefield 2 hitboxes. Now THOSE are dodgy!

TF2 hitboxes are the best I've ever had in a game.

I would be so much better if they were 100% accurate. The time I notice it the most of soldiers rocket jumping, if you hit right on their head when they're falling the most they'll take is a bodyshot, if you click 1-2cm(on the screen) higher than their head you have a better chance of it registering.

game's netcode is terrible, one of the reasons i barely player sniper anymore, makes me rage so hard.

Just be 'pro' and use the Huntsman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9qwIY393e0

But yeah, the netcode is pretty sketchy. I'm bad enough at sniper as it is. When I get a headshot and it doesn't register, it makes it all the more frustrating.

I don't see this degree of hitbox/model positioning errors (having to aim half an inch away,) but even very small ones make a difference. Heavies, for example, treat a shot in the nose as a chest shot, but aiming so that I just graze the top of the head registers a headshot. I don't get it. So many patient shots, waiting for uber to fade, have been borked because I assumed you could simply aim in the middle of the head. Silly me.
Even when I have the height advantage, something gets miscalculated. But to be honest, it could be much worse. Before its first fix, the Ambassador was how it could be worse.

Just to be clear, I meant to imply that they were the most inconsistent not the worst overall. The problem is with all the different speeds the classes move and generally how the faster the character moves the more you have to "lead". Most games you have to lead a bit but its fairly consistent as the hitboxes trail in front, and are effected by speed/distant in a somewhat realistic way.
With how difficult it is to score a kill in tf2 as a sniper I just wish that there was a way to tweak the netcode a little bit more just to keep the frustration down.

aim better

i get headshots when i want them. i barely ever evr ever get unregistered shots.

battlefield games have the worst hitboxes, even on stationary targets 2m away it sometimes misses for no reason. especially knifing. that shits hard for all the wrong reasons.

source hitboxes are pretty good, now go hit them in the head next time.

(ok, ill admit, heavy hitboxes are kinda dodgy, but still)
