How do I get started modding?

Hi All,

I'm interested in writing some server side game type variants for TF2, but I have to admit I'm new to Half Life, Source, VALVe, and pretty much everything to do with tf2.  I'm experienced in writing gametypes for other games such as Tribes 2, so I think I could figure out what to do, after I find out how to start! 

I downloaded the SOURCE SDK from Steam but if I attempt to launch the "create a mod" utility, it warns that its not compatible with the orange box version of the source engine, and does nothing.

So - is it possible to write mods yet for TF2 on the updated engine?  If so, any tips on how to get started or where I can find some resources would be greatly appreciated!

No word on when and if they will release the source code for it either ;/

Thanks for the response.  Well, I hope they do release it, and I'm inclined to think they will, considering all the success mods for half life (like tf and cs), they should know how important it is to have an active developer community!  Plus, it's half the reason I bought the game!!  Maybe I can make a mod with triggered events in the map editor, anyone know of a good resource on getting started with that?
