I think that the huntsman is way over used for its effectiveness. I find it to rely on luck a lot more than skill. I was wondering, in competitive tf2, if/when snipers are used, do they use the huntsman or the sniper rifle?

Good snipers use the rifle.
Bad snipers/ snipers who want a laugh use the huntsman.

I find most huntsman users spam at doorways and hope people get hit. :\ It's rare to see a good huntsman user because with skill the rifle is more effective.

The only time I ever use huntsman is if I'm just messing around and doing it for laughs. It just can't compete with the sniper rifle. Killing a huntsman sniper with a point blank headshot is one of my favorite things to do in this game. Its for spamming around corners and into doorways, and when you can't aim the regular rifle. There are a few times where I get a kill where it would be extremely difficult with the rifle, but those are very rare and amount to leading an enemy around the corner and then shooting right as he comes around the corner. Even then its luck, because I'm guessing that he will follow me though right away. If I'm wrong, I die.

Even if you somehow became an awesome huntsman sniper that doesn't spam for kills, with all that aim you have you would be more effective with the rifle.

If you can catch enemies while they're distracted (i.e. not paying attention and moving predictably) the huntsman is a formidable alternative. Great for taking down a heavy without a six second charge time, and it can be used to quickly fling an arrow at oncoming opponents, which I think is a little easier than quick-zooming and getting a snap headshot. It doesn't drop your FOV, does sufficient damage to bodyshot 125 HP classes in the one second charge time, and it sticks people up on walls. The huntsman does what it's meant to, which is give a better chance in close quarters. No zoom plus quick charge with a projectile instead of hitscan makes for a pretty excellent (read balanced) close/midrange weapon.

I do have to admit that someone sufficiently skilled with the rifle will be able to overcome the close-range shortcomings of the sniper. I've seen Yoshi use the huntsman, and he is really skilled with it. Makes me a little jealous, actually.

Most snipers who are good with the rifle can do good with the huntsman. Yes Yoshi is good with the huntsman, but he is better with the rifle.

They use the Sniper Rifle, but the Huntsman is about as annoying as the Sandman.
