So I was told I'm wasting ubers. This would not shock me, as my top 2 most played classes are: Scout Spy
Heavy has only recently crawled it's way up to the third spot, and will overtake spy oh so soon.
My approach to when I'm ubered is this: * If nobody is immediately near me I'll move toward Target Area(Where others are, or where control point is, or where intel is). * If people are distant(Mid to long range) I do not waste time firing, but either attempt to close the distance, or continue to the Control Point/Intel/etc.
Appearantly I'm supposed to fire at those people, who are distant, with the minigun...which does best at close to mid range. Example: I was on Hydro, ubered, I shoot at the people right there, they all scatter. I run for the Control Point. The Medic starts yelling SHOOT THEM DARNIT SHOOT THEM(The people who aren't even near me), when I'm quite close to the CP. So I stop, and start shooting. I die a second later since the uber was at 10-20% and instead of getting into the sheltered CP chamber I stood out on the ramp unguarded and easily taken out.
What am I supposed to do when ubered? I am the Uber Noob. Guide me.

from my understanding, u only can be uber-d when you have the medi-gun equipped. you can't shoot ur needle gun and be invincible at the same time, so therefore, you HAVE to make sure u stick with a heavy/soldier/pyro at ALL times. i only use my needles for spies that i bump into while healing.

He was the heavy, not the medic, re-read the post.
Additions: Sometimes its just bad timing, the medic could have helped by stopping his uber, and saving it a few moments, too. However, he could have been referring to someone else, possibly behind you or somewhere you weren't looking. I was there, so i know that it was a hectic battlefield, and the particular instance you're referring to was not the best time to even start the uber, should have gotten a bit closer. Better co-ordination on both parties' roles would have been nice.

I'm pretty sure Arlen is talking about when a medic ubers HIM as a heavy... @ Arlen: In this case, the med had no reason to uber you in the first place, unless you pushed through opponents to get to the spot that you're talking about in your post. If he ubered you just to be safe, it was his mistake, as the uber should have been saved in case you and him got jumped while capping the cp. If he ubered you to save your lives in the heat of battle, then the uber was useful and not wasted. Maybe he wanted you to shoot at them for some cover fire, so your teammates could run for the cap? Do you remember whether those enemies in the distance were snipers, perhaps?

One word: PUSH. If you're an ubered heavy and everyone runs away from you, standing there shooting them from long distance isn't going to do much good. Stop spinning your gun and run for that point or run for that crucial location on the map where you can flank the crap out of the other team.

He specifically said that the enemies were too far away, so he did move up to get to a better point. Anyway, read my addition /\

My gun was already firing, he ubered. I'm not certain the uber was necessary, but it most likely saved at least his life if not mine and his.

You stay under the effects of uber a second or two after you switch weapons. So, you could effectively keep switching from syringe gun or bonesaw and medigun to keep yourself invulnerable while attacking others. This is also how multi ubering works where you uber multiple allies at once by quickly switching your medigun between them.
Not sure what that or your post had to do with the original post though...
I don't really see anything wrong with what you're doing Arlan. When you get an uber, you are usually expected to run in and take out a well positioned sentry or clear an area if you can. If the enemy scatters then you still do what you can to clean em up but it's really situational.
You can't cap while uber'd so it's a waste to stand on a cp doing nothing but if you can get into a better position because you are uber'd at the moment, by all means do so. I think you would have had a much better firing position from the cover of the cp on hydro you were talking about. Keep in mind that the medic COULD have been wrong.
When I'm medic and I'm teamed with someone and I have uber, I wait till the last second to use it. The medigun heals while using uber so ideally you should uber someone a little after they start taking damage. If my partner finishes their job before the uber is up I'll switch to bonesaw or syringe gun to save the second or two of uber for the rush of enemies sure to come. You can't cap while an enemy is on the point so why not just surprise them with another uber when they think you're sitting ducks?
Final note, as a heavy you can't really do much at range unless they stand there for a good 15 seconds and let you shower them with all of your 200 rounds. Better off getting into some cover and waiting for a better opportunity.
Edit: So five posts popped up in the time it took me to write this...doh

I would say your medic ubered you prematurely. If there was that little resistance then the uber would of been better used on a sentry emplacement or closer to the cap point. Your team should of been behind you pushing with you while you were ubered anyway to get the enemies your medic was yelling at you about. The heavy doesn't have a very long effective range. I think you did all that you really could have done in that situation Arlen. If there is nothing to shoot or the target is out of range there is no point in nicking the enemy if it wont be a kill shot. Your medic should have switched his uber to someone with more range and especially someone that could move faster. Your only logical choice was to take ground from the enemy. Sounds like just another premature uberchargeulation. Don't worry, it happens to a lot of guys.
