Inspired by theButterfly: an intro to hip hop.

Alright well while my thoughts are fresh I thought I'd put them down here in a thread, for context theButterfly put together a mix for a friend as sort of an intro to hip hop and asked for my thoughts. I don't know if he wants to link that here, but I do know that a good few people I can think of off the top of my head could contribute to this as well so I figured I'd make a thread for it.

Two things immediately came to mind, more coming probably as I listen.

1. I would switch the tribe song and the roots song, put "Can I Kick it?" first. Also, get the album version of Act Too (Love of My Life), not the live one. Works better for a newbies ears methinks, and I would definitely not lead off with either version.

2. I know your name is not a reference to Digable Planets' Butterfly, but no nickel bag or I'm cool like that, really?

Could also use some Slick Rick and Jurassic 5.

Oh and for everyone else, what would you put on a mix to introduce a friend to hip hop?

Actually Doc, I have to agree with your first comment about using the live version.  As I've been listening to it a few times over I had wished I used the album version of that track too.

As far as the Exculsion of the Digable Planets, I think "Rebirth of Slick made it to the second or third round of revisions.

When I set out to make this I wanted to try and put things in here that illustrated some of the reasons why I fell in love with this music genre so many years ago.  So you're going to hear lots and lots of samples.  I love sampling.  I think my favourite aspect of hip-hop is how it has the feel almost of "found" music.   I love when artists can take a back ground track and rework it into a new form.   I tried to put some fun stuff, and also some sort of scary stuff.  In my minds eye, I think that this actually is a two disk set, the second disk would be a bit harder in tone, and you can sort of see the direction it would go with the last track.

I edited the last post with EPMD and KRS right before you posted so you may have missed that, also I really am with you on the "found music". That's one thing I love so much about it, and one of the reasons being a DJ whether radio or turntable would make me happier than a pig in shit. It's also the reason I like certain "techno", and by that I mean basically dudes with turntables. I love what probably my favorite DJ Mark Farina has to say about it:
