Instant respawn nullifies the Spy?

In general; I don't care for servers with an instant respawn. As the spy, all the planning you put to action goes to crap when you sap or stab, and they come right back. Especially in smaller/tighter maps. About the only use the spy has is to thin them out just enough to have your team move up inch by inch.

The main reason for my opinion, is that in servers with instant respawn the enemy concentrates in larger numbers in critical areas. So the difficulty lies in

1: Hard to get by when there's a big enough distance between you and them, and that your cloak runs out just as you get behind them.

2: They are so wall to wall, the chance of running into someone magnifies.

3: The instant you do some damage, you have maybe less then a 10 second window until the guy you've killed comes right back, warns everyone, and everyone thereon spy checks.

This depends on a map by map basis. But for the most part, I feel the spy gets short changed in instant respawn servers. In contrast to servers with larger respawn times (10-20 seconds) where the spy can really show some skill. I know that's what happened when I played the Orange Box map... that and a severe lack of pyro's.

I agree. I enjoy playing 2fort but most of the 24/7 servers are instant spawn... I have still topped the charts as spy (first and only time though :/ ) but I'd rather play with full spawn. It seems a waste to stop spawn when valve's spent so much time playtesting / changing / perfecting it. There's a place for it but too many servers are running it IMO. Oh well can't stop them it's their server.

2fort isn't too crowded, depends on the number of players.

Agreed, Chris.  It's Team Fortress, not a death match frag fest.  I've never played on an instant respawn server and I don't plan to.

No one likes waiting to respawn, but yeah, you just gotta deal with it, because instant respawn sucks.
Especially on dustbowl. On dustbowl servers with instant respawn, it gives a huge advantage to the defense.

Your right, no one likes waiting to respawn, but I agree it has to be in there. If not, then there is no penalty for dieing.

you're right; however, this is also the reason i choose to play on insta-respawn servers occasionally to improve my spy skills.  there are so many obstacles to overcome that doing anything is quite a feat.

I dunno but the spy is the only class i can use to "walk" the intel out of the enemies base.  Which is me just slowly moving it from their base into ours.  It take about 16 deaths but I can make the cap.

There is a penalty if you are far away from your respawn point- you have to get back to where you were before. The only time respawning is penalty free is when you are close to your base (and you are not a medic building ueber). Respawn time inversely proportional to distance from home base when killed - that would be ideal :-)
