I've beaten fallout 1 and 2, and am totally aware that the series is no longer in the hands of Black Isle, so my opinions may be a bit jaded by that.
Fallout is a radioactive Elder Scrolls with guns and V.A.T.S., and don't let anyone argue with you otherwise. From the conversation system to the animations to the emphasis on dungeon crawling, it is so easy to feel like you're playing an elder scrolls game. This isn't necessarily a critique, but the game is also guilty of so many of the obnoxious mistakes that Oblivion was guilty of:
-terrible environmental collision detection. I'm tired of falling through walls and getting stuck in rubble. - very predictable and one-sided dialogue that exists simply to foist the plot rather than let me role play. PLZ Bethesda go back to text conversations. - Ease of play. did anyone die playing Oblivion? Well I've died once in fallout and I'm lvl 13. - Vanilla character creation. My sneak character doesn't feel overtly different from my big guns/ melee character. weaksauce. - Overpowered skills. Gee, sorry you picked to spec computer instead of repair. hope you enjoy your weapons SUCKING like mad all game.
But I don't wanna bash this games brains in, so I'll list some pros:
- Fantastic atmosphere. The game totally convinces me that its world is plausible, and in fact exists. - V.A.T.S. may make the game idiot proof, but its also wonderfully cinematic. - So much more viable stuff to collect. plungers, pilot lights and what not. All the stuff that was junk in Oblivion now has a use in Fallout. - Decisions that affect "factions". Its nice to be able to sort of ally myself to different groups, and lose credit with others in the process. - The Capital Wasteland is without a doubt the most involved and oversized "dungeon" in any free-roam single player RPG I've ever seeen, and yes, the whole thing really is one big dungoen. Fuck ya.
Also, I'm convinced that there is no better build than small guns, stealth and repair. Every shot is a critical hit, if you have 10 agility you never miss and have SUPER V.A.T.S., and you can repair your weapons to jesus level. How could there be a better build than that?

There isn't.
Also, PC version or what? PC doesn't really have bad collision detection.
Except this one time a Brahmin got stuck in the ground halfway. That was cool.

You are right bout that it was a disappointment from playing 1 and 2. But you know, there's new generations playing all the time, so you need to make new stuff and more user-friendly games. I think they chose to do Fallout 3 like this because it is a wonderful game and would like more to play the fallout universe and perhaps go play game 1 and 2 as well. I hoped for the game to be like 1 and 2, but myeah.. But it is a great game! I did just a sneaker character. When I found a silenced pistol I was a happy man. And stuffing enemies pants with grenades is the best feature of all games. Just like Oblivion, you can mod this game like mad, PC only though And there are some amazing mods out there, so when you have finished the game everyone should try them out, also the expansions of course. I gotta show a screenshot someone took from a mod. It's simply... beautiful.

I have to say I really enjoyed this purchase. Ive made quite a few off of steam by now, and only this and COD4 are games that I am still playing since initial purchase. Other games like Far Cry 1 were very fun a for a week or two, and great games, especially when cheapened from already low prices, and there are some cool mods and maps out for it.
But Fallout 3 is a game I'm still regularly playing months after I initially bought and played it, and I cant really get enough of murdering people in different ways. There are quite a lot of weapon choices, and I still havent explored every weapon set; I mostly stuck to two handed small guns, but energy weapons and melee weapons are just as useful, and ive yet to really explore big guns at all.
I would agree, Small guns and Repair are extremely useful, although I was never one for Stealth. I tended to stick to other options like Lockpick and Science, because I really dont like being locked out of areas because numbers. Stealth seems replacable to me, where lockpick or science, one or the other, seems essential at times.
I havent had too many problems with collision detection personally. However the latest updates for the game have caused everyone troubles, by introducing forced mouse accel. and laggy/ bugged VATS mode. Running a fake-patch fixes some of these issues, but is buggy with the DLC's, which I would recommend anyway. Point Lookout is out next week I believe, and I will probably be picking that up.

Fallout 3 is an excellent game (I actually bought it twice) but the PC version is far more unstable than the 360 version. Maybe I'm pushing my computer too hard...
Renegade, I've found and removed (via third-party patch) the GfWL garbage, could you link me to this "fake-patch"?

I'll say this, I've never played the original Fallout games, but I have every intention of picking them up from Walmart since they're carrying a collector's pack of them. I have played Oblivion though, and Fallout 3 is pretty similar, but I don't see that as a bad thing, since I loved Oblivion, even though the collisions & 3rd person animations could be better. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, the open-endedness of it, and just seeing all of the different places in the Wasteland. It's simply beautiful and amazing to look out. I didn't get too far when I first bought the game, got distracted with TF2, however I reinstalled it Monday or Tuesday and couldn't stop playing and got through the main storyline Thursday night, including many side-quests. The fact that I haven't even discovered half of the locations in the Wasteland still amazes me and I'll probably be playing it quite often still, to get the achievements and just to explore some. Like I said, I'm not biased since I've never played a previous Fallout game, but I think this game has something to it and I don't regret getting it. Pluses far outweight whatever negatives it has in my opinion.

I like sneak, its an auto crit. saves ammo like mad. Ya it may be replacable, but I use one bullet and take out super mutants all over the place...at low levels.
and I'm using the PC version.
|
I've found small guns + sneak + lock picking/computer to be the best, but my melee + sneak character was incredibly overpowered.
|
As I was all into small arms, lockpicking, repair etc I had almost 0 in large guns. So one time I decided to test a minigun in battle. I sneak up on a mutant in some cave I was in and fire my minigun off in VATS at pointblank. NONE of the bullets hit But the most awesome part is the uh... that robot arm you use as unarmed. A critical hit from that results in an uppercut and if your enemy dies from that crit the head flies away =D Managed to deliver a crit at a ghoul and his head flew up at least 10m in the air.
