So, my friends and I have decided to form a band.  We have two guitars, a bass, a singer, and then me.  I can play piano (in the middle of Gr. 8 piano right now), basson (for concert band), and tennor sax (for jazz band), but our band lacks a drummer.  I have wanted to play the drums for a while now, so I volunteered to learn how to drum.

Unfortunately, I haven't the slightest idea where to get started with this.  Should I go to a local music store and ask about kits and lessons?  Start poking around eBay and try to find a cheap, used kit?  Or something else entirely?  All I know is that because of my environment (read: I'm 16 and live with my parents), I will probably not be able to get an acoustic set, and will likely have to go electronic and use headphones and amps.

Any guidance would be appreciated, as I have no idea where to start.

I would start out like i did, buying a used kit from a friend. I bought mine for 100 dollars. If your planning on recording, you might want to go new. But if your looking for just a raw beginning kit then go with a used one. (MAKE SURE IF YOU BUY A KIT THAT THE HARDWARE (STANDS) AND CYMBOLS ARE INCLUDED, MOST KITS DO NOT) (hehe quotes in quotes) But yeah however you feel comfortable starting out. Also, rock band is very good practice for praticeing lol. Good luck!

If you're planning on forming a band then you'll probably want to get a new or close to new set. I've bought a drumset of eBay before, they look better in the pics.

well, how much are you willing to spend. $500 will get you a basic, basic starter acoustic set. $1000 for anything worth recording.
as far as electronic, plan on $800 or more for the kit and the ability to record to a computer.

used will obviously be cheaper. i can help you once i know ur style, budget and where you live (if u want help looking for used stuff)

rockband was a good suggestion, play that on the higher levels-its actually like drumming
check local music stores to see if they offer lessons. to save money, i recommend taking a few of these until you get down the basics than practice on your own. try playing to music and either imitate or play your own thing wiuth the music.

before you get a set, try tapping out the rhythm with your hands and feet and try to play along to songs

Most of music i play is fast metal so i required a double bass pedal or dobule bass drums, you should think about that too. Although, that may be semantics.

Thanks for the responses so far, everyone!

First of all, I've come to an agreement with my parents that will allow me to actually get an acoustic kit.  Our band will mostly be playing rock-ish type stuff.  I think that it'd be best to get a cheap, used kit to start, and then move up when I need to, no?  I live in Edmonton, AB, and I'm not sure on my final budget.  Probably around $500 or so.  I own the first Rock Band, and would call myself a decent drummer on it.  I can do about 2/3 of the songs on Expert.

Start with basic snare drumming, doing patterns. Learn drum theory if you're actually serious about doing anything semi-succesful. It's not just bangin on a few heads and making a beat. Like any instrument, start from the bottom and progress at your own pace but learn the basics and the background.
