Listen Up: Do NOT necro old threads, Do NOT bump your post count

It's come to my attention that certain people seem to be reviving long dead threads. This practice is known as "necro'ing" and is generally frowned upon here. If a thread has been dormant for over a month, it is probably a dead thread, so just leave it be. We leave those old threads up in case people want to re-read them in the future, but once the conversation has pittered out, it's not really something people want to revisit.

If a topic is so scintillating that it needs to be discussed again, consider making a new post about that topic (again, use good judgment here).

An occasional necro now and then will be frowned upon. However, if I see you necro'ing multiple threads in a very short period of time, I'm going to consider you a troll, and you'll get an official warning, followed by an official ban, if the behavior continues. If you have questions about whether or not to post on an old thread, just ask an admin.

Similarly, if you think you're going to run up your post count by rapidly posting 1 line responses in dozens of threads at a time, you're going to risk being labeled a troll for that too. So please don't do that. Earn your post count by posting well reasoned (or hilarious) responses to the conversation.

HOWEVER, this does not mean that we want the Wild West out there. Do not necro multiple threads within days, grief others intentionally, or otherwise break any of the rules being stated above.

How about old forum games?  If not could we get a lock on really old threads?

I'm not going to make a blanket statement at this time about individual threads, particularly in Forum Games. The current forum mechanics make it difficult to lock every single thread for us admins, so I'm just going to ask you to use good judgment for now. The occasional revival of a thread in that forum isn't going to bother many people. Reviving a dozen threads at a time is what will raise some eyebrows.

If a thread is revived with a question, is it ok to answer it?

Only if the question is posed in an intelligent and thoughtful manner.

Answer it nicely, and remind the asker that necroing is frowned upon and that in the future please make a new thread.

What if the necro is especially hilarious. I think we can let those slide.

PPS If a necroed thread is already off the latest forum threads list leave it alone.
