September 12th is the release date for the highly anticipated new album from Metallica entitled "Death Magnetic". The album was produced by Rick Rubin which is good news and features 10 new songs including "The Unforgiven III", which if follows suit with the first 2 Unforgivens, should be pretty epic. They just completed the video for the first single "The Day That Never Comes" and it's supposed to be released later in the month of August. As a side note the full album will be available for download to play with Guitar Hero 4 in Septemeber. Metallica has also announced a 3 leg tour that will be coming to my town, Seattle, on Dec. 1st @ The Key Arena. So far the American leg of the tour starts Oct. 21st in Glendale, AZ and ends on Jan 31st 09' in Newark, NJ. 32 American dates at the moment. The album is supposed to bring Metallica back to their roots and in the style of their first album "Kill Em All" with more of a faster, thrasher sound. While pretty much everyone agrees that "St. Anger" was a failure I think they needed a shit album to wear off the rust of recording music. I've found a high qaulity live version of one of the songs from the upcoming album called "Cyanide" and it sounds pretty solid. If this is just the tip of the iceberg for this album then I can't wait to hear the rest. Cyanide Live HQHere is the track listing for the "Death Magnetic" album coming September 12th 2008: That Was Just Your Life The End Of The Line Broken, Beat & Scarred The Day That Never Comes All Nightmare Long Cyanide The Unforgiven III The Judas Kiss Suicide & Redemption My Apocalypse

As I said in the Shoutbox, I have hopes, but I'm hesitant. I'm one of the Metallica fans that feels that Metaliica died with Bob Rock and the Black Album, when the other members got involved in the core writing of the songs, and they got shortened. The band is saying that its a throwback to the Justice For All Days, with Trujillio bringing back some of the well loved "lead bass" that Cliff Burton (RIP) was famous for. That would be nice, but they they still haven't said anything about Lars Ulrich limiting his creativity to percussion, where he belongs in Metallica. There was a joke I always loved, it went:
"There was this drummer who had an idea for an album, so he went to his bandmates and said: "Hey guys, I'm got this idea for an album, its called St. Anger." - Say that one next time your drummer buddy iritates you. It works on mine.
Cyanide isn't a bad track, but to be honest, ot doesn't carry the ferocity of something like Blackened or Disposable Heroes. In my opinion, Hetfield's vocals should be shortened to barks, not these long drawn out vibratos, a la "Fuel". This album will either be huge, or will crash and burn. I'm hoping for the first, but the reality is that these guys have grown up and have kids now. Their heyday was in a drunken angstful 20's. I really, really want to be optimistic, but the reality (as a stubborn metalhead) is that there are other upcoming metal albums that I have much more anticipation for.

To me, for this to be a truly successful album, they'd have to reinvent themselves much like Priest did on Painkiller. If they can't pull off something of that magnitude, well....

Just found out they'll be playing with Lamb of God in Vancouver. In spite of my first post, I think I'll try and get tickets for this Dec. 2 show. They may not be in their heyday, but neither is Maiden, and Iron Maiden was mind penetrating. There still a worthy live band as far as I'm concerned.

Wait, when is Rick Rubin producing an album good news? It's worrisome at best....

I'd have to agree with Mr. White and soxrox for the quote. They have said everything I was going to.

This thread is getting a bumpity because... http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?item=601119Just released today (Aug.23) James vocals are softer, the song is okay, I guess, but my opinion remains the same, Metallica has lost the edge. Anyways..discuss the new single... EDIT: The song actually gets pretty badass near the end. There is some good classic riffing and lead guitar.

I really hope this album doesn't dissapoint.
