It hasn't bothered me that much over the past couple of months but I'm starting to wonder what are the ranges for the melee weapons?

Snipers can be as far away as across the bridge on 2fort and still hit you with that machete of his (Not an exaggeration) but a scout's bat seems to have to be at point blank.

Anyone have a guess?

Well, it works like this.  If you're trying to hit someone for that little teeny sliver of health needed to kill them, then you have to be hugging them to hit.  But if you are running away from them, about to die, or if they crit, then their range increases tenfold.

Seriously though, the illusion of being hit from far away is due to different ping times with relation to the server.  On their screen, you are right in front of them, but on yours, it hasn't updated their model yet, so they appear to be farther away.  At least, that's how I think it is.  If not, then the first explanation works just as well, it seems to be rather true.

So I suppose this applies to the ps3 as well?

Are pings different for each server created by EA?

The ping time depends partly on the distance between your console or PC and the server where the game is hosted, because the fastest the signals can go is the speed of light. If you are in London and ping a computer in Los Angeles, you get a delay of a few milliseconds because of the thousands of miles the data packet takes to go down the wire and get sent back.
Ping is also affected by the business of the server, the number of intermediate machines (routers, etc.) that stand between your home and the host game server, and the general amount of network traffic. If the packets of data have to wait around to get passed on, it increases the ping.
That is why different people see different amounts of ping and it can vary during a game.

The result of ping variation is lag and shows in the game like Platypig said above. Your character can seem to be in one position while to the other player it is in a different position. More accurately, the position of your character on the server's map of the game is what determines hits. What you and your opponent see is the best approximation of the server's picture. This explains things like frontstabs, the variability of weapon damage and the reach of melee hits.
