Are f***ing impossible. I finally got the chance to spectate Wonderwall, and he manages to hit ppl in midair 9/10 times. The times I've tried, it's a straight wiff. I can't get the timing down.

It's much slower and more leisurely than you think. You just have to keep doing it, and keep trying, until you get relaxed enough that time goes nice and slowly while you're taking the shot.

So, as with most classes, just keep practicing.

I agree...
the long version:
one time I was playing a game where wonderwall was on the opposing team.
needless to say he was dominating me.
I was on top of the enemy spire (badlands), and I saw a soldier rocket jump up at me.
I aimed carefully and hit him with a rocket in the air, knocking him away from the point. It turns out the soldier was wonderwall.
wonderwall [rocket] nucnuc
wonderwall fell to a clumsy death
I finally manged to kill wonderwall after quite a few deaths, but he was still dominating me

the short version:
practice... forever

In some sense midair shots are easier than other shots, since the people flying move in a much more predictable way than people on the ground.
On the ground you never know if your target suddenly is going to start running in another direction, which makes it hard to hit long range targets (if they move in straight lines there is not much of a problem though).
In the air they cannot control their movement much (except for demomen and scouts..).

So if you really master target leading in the air you should be able to hit most shots.

However, you cannot rely on splashdamage in the air, so you really have to hit them directly, which takes a lot of precision and reflexes.

I would recommend practicing a lot on some deathmatch (like dm_store,dm_hans or maybe ctf_bball) map togheter with other soldiers.
There you can get a feeling for airshots.

Play on a deathmatch server with low gravity enabled.  It'll give you much better practice at shooting things out of the air.

wouldnt that do more harm that good though? because everyone would be moving at different speeds that in regular games, so you might get good at the low grav, shoot where someone would be with low grav, in a regular server, and they wouldnt get anywhere near where you shoot at?

bball is fun to practice on, nothing like blowing people up mid air as they think they will be capping the flag. Oh, fun times...
