Music Recording Advice?

So I've been playing guitar and piano for about five years each, and started jamming with a few friends about a year ago. We've played a few shows, and we want to get a few tracks recorded. However, we'd rather record them ourselves instead of going into a studio and paying copious amounts of money for a few hours. I've been looking into recording equipment recently, mainly a soundboard as I already have mics and a decent computer. Any suggestions from those of you with recording knowledge?

I've got a budget of about $700. I'd be willing to go over, but I'd like to keep it as low as possible. I'm looking for something with about 8 inputs, easy to use, and able to hook up pretty easily. This is something I'd want to use for several years to come. Suggestions?

ill get back to you but one of my friends is really into that type of stuff and has a nice sound card for his computer that has like 7-8 inputs...its external and ran hime like $500...ill find out what it is and get back to you.

He has the first one and really likes it. Says he uses it all the time...he said that the others are some of the best from what he hears also.

for software he said he uses sonar because he knows it the best but pro tools is another favorite...hope that helps.

A friend of mine records his music himself using his computer. What did you plan on recording with? The cheapest way probably is just getting software and using that for recording. If you want to IM him or something, let me know and I can ask him if it's okay (and he loves talking music, so it should be fine).
