Well, I've been reading all the forums forever and just recently started posting.  I've been reading up on pyros and experimenting with them.  My conclusion is that they're not nearly as bad as everyone claims.  Sure, they have their downfalls, but they are not unplayable.

My idea has to do with or without the new weapons coming to the classes.  I thought something interesting, balanced, would be to remove the shotty from the pyro and give him a "flame gun".  I know he has a flamethrower, I'm talking about the spies revolver that would shoot fire bullets setting hit enemies on fire, or possibly the aids gun that shoots flaming needles.

The idea is pretty simple, so tell me what you guys think.

When you need to use your shotgun (which is quite a lot) your enemy is already on fire and running away, then you put some shots in his back to finish him off. A gun to re-set him on fire would be pointless. And anyway, I couldn't live without my shotty ^^.

Hm. Your idea is not bad but if you ask me: the Pyro definitely needs his shotgun. Against soldiers which are one of the most difficult opponents a Pyro could meet the shotty is very powerful to keep some distance combined with pyro's speed.

That is completely situational.  There are plenty of times people stay completely away from my flames where I have to use my shotty.  Apparently you don't understand the power of fire; It disorients/blinds alot of people, does continuous damage, and looks freaking awesome.  I love the shotty, don't think this is a shotty bash thread.  Obviously, the pyro is bad at mid/long range, I saw this as an opportunity to give him more options, while keeping him a fire based class.

Trust me, tell a spy his revolver sucks and you'll get flamed hard.  It's a respectable weapon that can kill people as well as sentries.  Also, I don't think it should do JUST fire damage, I believe it should do a 50/50 mix.  Fifty percent physical damage, fifty percent fire.

@ Hesitater

I agree, but that's where the revolver doesn't fail either.  It does I believe an average of 60dmg a hit, w/ 6 shots you can kill just about any class.  Don't even get me started on crits with it.

I didn't sat a Spy's revolver is bad, its a great weapon.
Also I didn't say that flames where in any way pointless. The only way I can see that your enemies would get away from you without you setting them on fire is if you where charging them down head on and they saw you first, which is not a good idea with the Pyro.

@ A Leprechaun

I actually agree with most of what you say, I just thought the idea would maintain close combat effectiveness like the shotty, AND give the pyro more mid/long range capabilities in certain situations.

I know enough to not beat a dead horse and if you think it's a bad idea that's cool, just wanted to try to win you over at least once.

Wow, I'm just amazed, I can't believe not a single person thought this a good idea.   It increases pyro range, keeps close range effectiveness, sticks with the fire theme, and allows for more long range confusion on the teams part.  I respect everyone's opinons, but I'm literally amazed.

I would love for the shotgun to have a burning effect, or extra damage because of "fire-bullets" or something.

I think you all are missing the point of optional loadouts.  Such options are not spoze to make the pyro better but give him/her OPTIONS as to how to play.  Personally I'd love to give the pyro a pistol in lieu of the shotty so that he'd have some long range capacity.  This would weaken his mid-range game, but that's my choice.

What would ya guys think of a complete short range? for the shotty there will be something thats only on short range good as 2nd weap. to make the pyro  only for short range, but there make him very deadly, and increasing the fire damage to let him be the death in person if he stand in front of you ? that would underline the TEAM aspekt, he only is good as what he should DO !
