do i just hit the hot key to talk? and when in game and logged into vent do i automatically here the players who are in the same server as me? or do i hear noone unless they hit their hot key?

If you have push to talk on, then you will have to push the hotkey (don't remember what the default is but you can assign it to be anythign) in order to talk. Just imagine that Vent is another program running in the background. It won't interfere with any of your other programs so you will still be able to hear in-game talk on TF2, but you will also be able to hear the ppl in Vent. No one in the Vent channel will be able to hear you unless you have your talk key pushed down.
