It took me a couple times playing heavy before I realized somthing.

It's a pain to have to spool up your gun before you can shoot somone, but the developers have let HWG's spool up their guns without firing.   Hold down your right mouse button if you expect to see fresh meat for your bullets ... you WILL be more effective if you use this smartly, and it's not always obvious to new players to do.  It wasn't for me.

Yeah...I didn't know it until last night when I saw a heavy hanging out near our base in 2fort, just revving it, waiting to fire.

Also, right click does other things you may or may not expect. I was very surprised to see my spy cloak for the first time.
Demos detonate their sticky bombs with it, Medics use their ubercharge, Sniper zooms in [obvious], etcetera.

Great trick for you but annoys the medics.  They call me slow poke when I do it lol.  You can't rush me. I usually last long that way   I use it all the time.  Also warns other players that there is enemies near by.  Great tip btw

God even on 1.6 games I'd always walk around with the minigun half revved by tapping my mouse repeatably. First thing I did getting into TF2 was right-click to see if they actually implemented that feature, and to my delight they did!

Thanks, I was wondering how to do this.  As if I never thought to try the second function button...

Attention:

Always keep in mind... even if you keep that Motherhubber spinning, ready to pump out its 200$ custom tool cartridges at 10k rounds per minute... what if any incoming enemy might hear that? if i hear a whirling barrel somewhere close, i preferrably move especially cautious!

yea its definitely a dead giveaway to ur position, but it saves you the wind up time where a scout can jump in and jump out before you even shoot.

To be honest, it was mentioned before but i'm glad i could add a lil fluffy flav to it

Additionally... depending on the map you are playing... heavies that play a defensive role shouldn't really bother about being heard. Its productive. Its like "zomg  hwguy inc scared GTFO!". even on offense. your a never-stopping rolling steam tank ready to blast away anything getting close to you....

...in the end, i guess, its either situational or a matter of personal taste...
