This is the place to share the oddball tricks that make you better at the medic class. My primary reason for visiting these forums is to learn new tactics that I couldn't have discovered in one of the standard medic guides. For example, I learned that the kritzkreig puts out fires here, and that you can split ubers multiple times towards the end with a minimal loss of overall charge time.  Both of these skills have been beneficial, so I'll attempt to reciprocate and get this party started:

1) The Bonkblocking Counter - Scouts are invincible while they use the bonk energy drink.  After you deploy your charge, they'll drink it and bodyblock you to pry the uber apart.  For five seconds, they can't hurt you, and you can't hurt them.  But you can ubersaw them, and each time you hit, you get the standard +25% charge. You can use this to neutralize their blocking, or just to get free ubers off scouts who thought their energy drink was sufficient to cap a point.

2) Heavy-Hopping - You're running down a tunnel towards a corner.  As you approach the end, a heavy jumps out, his minigun singing the bitter song of respawn-wait-time.  But you know about heavy-hopping.  As his bullets begin to collide you run backward, and crouch-jump into the air.  You take severe damage, but it pushes you back further than you would have gotten through running alone.  By chance you can retreat around the next corner and look for a health pack or dispenser.

Basically, if you're retreating from weapons fire while crouch-jumping, it can occasionally push you back far enough to make an escape.  This works best against heavy weapons guys, who spit out a constant stream of bullets that don't do much damage at range.  It works against scouts less frequently (with better chances against the FaN), but if you crouch-jump back as the first shotgun blast hits, you will sometimes be blown up to twenty feet away, which means they have to switch to the pistol to gun you down as you make the dash for cover.  It isn't a great tactic, and it won't always work, but it has kept me alive in situations where I thought the respawn timer was a certainty.

3) Blutsaugher Practice - The blutsaugher is a fantastic weapon that requires a lot of practice. Unfortunately, we spend almost all our time healing, and rarely get the chance to hone our syringe skills.  I've read about other medics who set up bots to practice on, but I don't think that's a good idea, since bots will never move in the natural way that other players will.  In my opinion, the map for blutsaugher practice is dm_store.  In deathmatch maps your team isn't going to lose no matter what you do, so you can practice combat medicine guilt free.  Ideally, I'd love to see a dm map like the one where soldiers duel each other until one does 1200 damage, but until then dm_store is the best alternative.

So what are your strategies?

I never have managed to ubersaw a bonked up scout, but it's a nice idea. I believe the blutslauger also leeches health from them.
Heavy hopping has saved my ass many-a-time. Jumping whilst retreating really is much faster.
Blutslauger is lethal if you have good aim, but I learnt quickly that if a crack scout is going for you, you're dead.

I don't have many tactics, but when charging in with uber I keep a watch for players around on red health being chased, especially by enemy pyros. Flicking the uber onto them for a split second often helps them to escape and can occasionally divert their attacker's attention away from them.

Those are some very nice tricks, didn't know most of them

Keep in mind a Medic's Charge charges up faster when healing AND buffing. When a Solly or Demo helps me grind a charge, I think they often fail to know this
(I don't want to get caught off guard with them low in Health, which has happened)

When I uber and get close to a pyro or whatever(especially if they are disrupting my uber). A quick hit or 2 extends my uber just that much longer.

Sentry Blocking

Probably one of the most useful and easy tactics in a medics arsenal is to uber and stand in front of an enemies sentry to shield the ubered player and allow him to destroy the sentry easier. I do it when i can coz its basically all i can do and helps the sentry die faster.

Interesting tactics.  Especially the Bonk tip.  Never occurred to me to try that.   I think ultimately the medic's best tactic is running away.  I'm never hesitant to turn tail and run away from my healing target if the situation looks overwhelming.

Faking out Pyros with Flamethrowers

Backpedal as much as you can while firing needles into a Pyro who's constantly chasing you down with the Flamethrower.  When the time comes when he is about to overtake you, jink forward (and through the fire) and start moving in the opposite direction if your health can withstand this move.  Many times, a Pyro who has a large fireball in front of his face won't notice the Medic making a 180 degree turn until a couple moments, allowing you to continue to sink needles into him and get more space between you.

I concur with 22mojom22 though, the Medic's first priority is survival, and if that means a tactical retreat, do it.

Aegis, that's a really interesting idea. I'll have to try that.

Don't always have your medigun out. If you know that you are in a spot where no teammates are around you, get your needler out. Only switch to the medigun once you get within range of healing.

Communicate. Having a mic will bring you from a good medic to a great medic. Always tell your patients if you are going to uber them, and ask if they have enough ammo to do so.

Heal everyone. Don't hold personal grudges against anyone. (Unless they are griefing and being literally NO help to your team.) Don't just stick to that heavy. You will get more points for healing everyone than just one person.

I found that an kritzkrieg uber on a sniper is very useful

I believe that it count as a headshot even if it's a bodyshot which does 150 damage, so 1 shot in the chest can kill medics, engies, scouts, sniper and spies.

and since it's 8 seconds you can do pretty much damage (1shot per second x 8 seconds = 1200 damage) and now it's easier because the sniper rifle have the crosshair even unscoped so it's easier to aim
