Inspired by this thread, I wanted to ask you experienced medics a question.

What do you do when you're playing medic buddy to a soldier who rocket jumps this much?

Obviously, if there's a crowd of people, you buff up the soldier, he flies off to do his thing while you stay with the crowd and keep them fighting fit.

But sometimes, it's only you and the soldier around - I've found this when playing medic with wonderwall on Chaos - and he jumps off to take out some speck he's seen on the other side of the map. I find that if I run after the soldier, sometimes I get cut off by other enemies and can't help him.

I've come to the conclusion that my duty is to stay alive, and that the rj-er will return for more health when they need it. And that usually, it's irresponsible for me to follow into "enemy territory" unless I'm sure I can survive it. And that I'm more use to the soldier alive and safe than I am potentially dead and closer.

But, what do you do when playing with someone like ww?

if he jumps off, don't run after him.
Staying alive is your biggest responsebility as a medic, and when he's on the other side of the map, he can't protect you.
Try rather to go back and find another team-mate that you can heal=)

There's not really....one specific thing to do..

If the solly rocket jumps to get the drop on some1, and there's no baddies in-between you and him, then follow him.

However, if he rocket jumps over a lot of ppl or up to some hard-to-get-to spot, then f00k it and back up and either wait for him to come back or find some1 else to heal.

Don't ever wait out in the open though. If you don't know if any1 is in a forward position in need of heals, just keep goin back til you get to yr spawn area or run into some1. Everything is situational, of course, but just don't ever stand around feeling all neglected. Get SOMEWHERE quick lol.

When I've got a medic with me and I RJ someplace, I'll usually try to warn him about it and tell him to stay there or run off someplace safe, depending on whether or not I think I can get back to him quickly. The medic should do what he thinks is the safest for him, I take full responsibility for blasting myself away and don't expect to be followed blindly.

My general rule of thumb is if the Soldier doesnt tell me that hes rocket jumping, he doesnt need a medic. Good Soldiers - ww, frozen, lancer, etc - will tell you they are rocket jumping, and they normally will come back to where they left you, in the event an enemy is there now.

I find someone who is slightly less mobile and just buff up the soldier when he comes back I buff him up provided my slower comrade isn't almost dead (I need to stay alive and having a combat class around facilitates that more easily than having someone all the way across the map).

Look at the situation and judge if it's worth following him into or not.

Often that soldier who RJ'ed to get at someone and kill them quickly will RJ back to you after the deed is done for all your healing goodness. Good soldiers know how to protect their medics, but remember you can still follow if the situation allows it.

I can't think of many situations where this should happen but there are a few. In matches/smaller games while attacking C on Gravelpit it happens all the time, it's about getting the soldiers up top with full health and have them being invuln while fighting whatever is up there for that second, and that 1or so seconds of invuln before it wears off once they get up there makes a HUGE difference. After the first soldier breaks the chain pass it off to someone else getting up there with a sticky/rocket jump or just follow another person up the normal way during the rest of it.

It depends on the game. In a pub game, I'll let RJ-happy soldiers do their own thing and not worry so much about following them. If they RJ into a stupid situation, that's their own fault and I won't be following. However, I do try to keep myself in a good position so that I can heal them when they need it. They're probably not expecting top-notch medic work in a pub anyways, so it's not too big of a deal.

In a competitive match, if you happen to be alone with a soldier and he carelessly RJs away leaving you to die, well he's not doing his job and you probably should try to stick with the other soldier. Soldiers are gonna rocket jump, especially to chase down a medic or to get the high ground, but the good ones will always do it in such away that they're never far from the medic and never leave him on his own for more than a second or two.

Basically, what matters most is how good the soldier is, both at deathmatching and at not leaving you alone for too long. Unfortunately, the bad soldiers don't realize this and will yell at you sometimes.
