yeah, i said it.  because it's true.  the whole series was a glorified commercial for Hasbro.  now that doesn't mean it wasn't fun to watch, as fighting robots always are, but come on? who seriously expected the movie to be anything more than a glorified commercial for Hasbro (and the Army, and GM, and Xbox and Mountain Dew) with really, really cool-looking giant robots?

Yeah, but you neglect the fact that it was a comic book series, too.  Die-hard fans of GI Joe and Transformers read the comics - and in the comics, the stories and characters were much more fleshed out.  I would actually suggest that some of you guys pick up those old issues instead of going to what will inevitably be a waste of time and money.

Then there was the GI Joe vs Transformers crossover, which kicked ass.

In fact, GI Joe was so well written at one point (written by Vietnam veteran Larry Hama), it was nominated for several awards.  Hama was also the man responsible for writing about 98% of the file cards (cut off the back of the action figure backing boards), and later on they even created a character "Tunnel Rat" based on Hama's likeness (the character being an explosives disposal technician... exactly the job Hama perfomed while serving.)

I am glad that I did read this review.  While I hated the first movie.  Hated, hated, hated.  I was almost willing to give this one a chance based on the fact that the trailers looked kind of cool combined with the fact that they had done away with the need for needless back story because of the first movie I hoped Trans2 might actually give us a bit more character.  Looks like I was wrong.

As I've already mentioned, I love Ebert and his reviews.  I have always loved the fact that he writes from the place of a fan of movies first and foremost.   He doesn't expect every movie to be Citizen Kane.  All Ebert wants at the end of the day is to sit in a dark room for 2 hours and be entertained, and is completely okay admitting that often times it is fine for a movie to achieve this goal and nothing more, while at the same point he can discuss the intellectual merits of film with the best of them.  It is this unpretentious approach to a medium the man clearly loves which has made me such a gigantic fan of his.

It sounds like Transformers 2 is going to do little to invalidate my claims that if you want to see a real Transformers Movie your only choice is the 1986 animated film.

I could go on and on about how much I hated the first movie, but I already did that here in the review I wrote.   Back upon it's initial release.  (Sorry for reposting the link, but this is easier then retyping my points here.)

Hey, remember that time when people didn't take every single movie release so seriously and appreciated the occasional popcorn flick during the summer to unwind and just have fun?  If you honestly hate explosions and cool robot CGI every once in a while, you hate America.

This is the general argument.

I pay money to be entertained at the movies.  Transformers didn't entertain me at all.

I wish my standards were low enough to enjoy it.  I wouldn't have to defend my views against the masses that love shit that goes boom.

I love shit that goes boom.  I also love movies that deliver with incredible character development and plot.

I, for one, am very excited about seeing Transformers 2, knowing that I will see nothing more than fancy explosions.  Also, Megan Fox.

I wish people would stop saying megan fox, she just freaks me out now, with all her quotes about the different kinds of farts and not showering

Did anyone just go to see the GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS beating the GIANT ROBOT SHIT out of each other? I did, I got what I payed for. Plot was an interesting diversion that might have filled in gaps between GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS fighting.

What happened to appreciation of mindless violence go? Sure a plot is fun too, but if you want a plot go and see a franchise more likely to deliver one. Or a non michael bay movie.

-Because chicks dig giant robots

EDIT: Hah, apparently at least 4 or 5 people did. Man I should read the entire thread

Rock on my violence loving brethren
