Well, I need a secondary class to play as in my clan, and I'm looking at soldier.

I was thinking of sniper but decided I needed to pick a versatile class, because I will have to play this on any map I dont want to spy on.

Soooo, any tips on becoming a better soldier? I'm talking more strats, I've always believed that aiming is something you learn for yourself. I'm working on it. What I need help with is how to play soldier in a competetive environment (scrims/matches).

Practice on this map while you're waiting to join or server or something, it seriously helps. I used to suck at soldier but got a lot better after playing this.

Don't play a secondary class.
It sounds stupid, but if you're really looking to get into the competitive scene playing more than one class can really mess you up. Each class has its own mindset and, unless you can maintain that focus and switch between them, you're better off just sticking with one.

But I'd agree that if you want to get better at soldier you should play tr_rocket_shooting. There's also tr_airshot_v0 if you want to get pretty advanced with it. Just learn how to juggle and how to rocketjump. From there it's just a matter of mastering those two skills.

The problem is that spy is far too situational and depends on the other team making mistakes, or at least not being very aware. I'm hoping the spy update changes this, but we will have to wait and see. Right now I feel like I'm gimping myself by playing spy as my main, because I feel as if I have reached a skill ceiling. There are definitely ways to improve from here, but overall they won't change the fact that another class could probably be more effective.

Practice on maps that aren't goldrush or dustbowl on the TF2F servers. I'll say that again.

Practice on maps that aren't goldrush or dustbowl on the TF2F servers.

The TF2F servers are full of good players to challenge you; you'll get rocked hard if it's your first time playing soldier, but you'll learn quick. By all means play gold and dust, but these maps are very much demoman friendly and aren't really the best maps to practice on.

They also give me a ping of around 230 - not an option.

Then find a server with a low ping with a group of players who aren't incompetent. Playing a lot of games with incompetent players gives you a sence of superiority when in reality you're only slightly more talented than they are. The TF2F servers (The Hampshire Heavies servers are also good ones, I get 10-15 ping compared to 100-110 on TF2F) will challenge you and make you better.
