wait.. you just want quake?  I mean Quake Live is out there and free, though it's just quake III in a browser.

EDIT: If you do get it, I HIGHLY recomend downloading the Tenebrae mod. It makes Quake look really good.

Why wouldn't you just play Quake live? I think you'll find it's a lot more active than quake.
