Hey guys, I'm new here.
Lately I've been trying to learn the spy class and I'm having mixed results....some maps I do well and some I just can't get through the choke points and blend in.
As I bump into people I get blown to hell. So my question is, do you experienced spies have any particular map/zone/whatever where you change to another class? Or like, if there are too many pyros or something?

Thanks in advance.

"Pro Spies"...

BEST TIP YOU WILL EVER GET: DON'T "BLEND IN". USE YOUR CLOAK, AND ACT AS IF YOU HAVE NO DISGUISE. Nobody is fooled by disguises anymore and it only works if they're distracted. Cloak in, kill, cloak out.

Next best tip: If there's more than 2 pyros on either team, get off the server or go soldier. It won't help your skill at all playing on that server.

Things that kill even pro spies...

1. Aware players. If you uncloak when there is silence, or when players know that there is a spy around due to your previous exploits, then expect to be caught often. Go for targets that are distracted by others, targets that are distracted by moving through dangerous areas such as near a sentry and targets that are distracted by them attempting to get to a capture of some kind.

2. Medics, scouts and pyros. They move fast, and are usually looking out for flanking surprises. Expect to be discovered and bumped into if you are walking through space most traffic walks through. Use height and ledges when moving past enemies, and dont be afraid to run in the other direction at any time to get away even before being discovered. Be patient, but efficient with your movement. You can always find more ammo or stand still in a safe spot for a while if you move minimally. Don't use your cloak when moving through friendly territory. If you move efficiently, you can afford to move around the long way, the sneaky way; the way you know others shouldn't be going often given the situation.

3. Engies. Learn to stab and sap. Learn to move into position using the dispenser or sentry as an object you can hide behing. Uncloak when the sentry is shooting, because that is the time when the engie is most distracted. Stab and sap! Or sap and shoot if you cant kill the engie easily by stabbing (this may fail hard if the engy knocks your sapper off. Stand behind a dispenser and shoot him if you can, hiding from the sentry as much as possible).

4. Other spies. Spies that are cloaked when you uncloak should follow you and kill you. When you are going for a target you are most unaware; the perfect time for them to strike. You should also stab or shoot spies that you see going for your teammates. Use your mic.

Oh, and learn to use enemies blind spots. This works for any class, approach from the safest direction to use surpirse to the greatest extent. But if people see you walking directly for someones back, they will spycheck. Don't walk directly for peoples' backs if you think that their nearby friends will spot you as a spy. Unless you are ok with dying for a kill.

On topic: I don't play offensive spy too often, usually switch to solly. I enjoy switching often, just to see if I can get in a niche with any class. Medics, Demomen and Engy's are commonly needed in various situations.

Actually drake, I hate to say it but in most pubs if you stay 5 feet+ away from enemy players with a reasonable disugise they will likely be fooled and believe you are a team mate.

If you're trying to get better, you shouldn't worry about what works only in pubs, you should improve on what works.

One must not rely on the inconsistent shortcomings of foes, but rather the constant strengths of oneself.
