A Short Review
Spoilers, kinda. It won't spoil that much but if you really don't want any sort of hint towards the game in any way then any "maybe" spoilers are in
red. They really aren't that big and shouldn't give anything away but this is just a failsafe.
Me and my friend got this for the Playstation 3 the day before it officially came out (he's good friends with the people at the shop) and have already played 10+ hours to it and completed most of the story.
Well the demo had gotten us really excited, we had played it to completion millions of times in anticipation of the actual game and had to hyped up to the brink of implosion. When playing the actual game we weren't dissapointed.
I have only played Resi 4 and loved that so I wouldn't exactly call myself a Resi fanboy but I knew I wanted to play Resi 5 to death. If you enjoyed Resi 4 then you'll enjoy this. The games are quite different in my view however. Where Resi 4 tried to scare you through the general horror game tactics Resi 5 does not. Resi 5 focuses more on the action side of things. And this is not a bad thing. Instead of bieng scared to walk down that corridor you are scared because there are 50 moujinis (the name for the new zombies, it's swahili for "evil spirit" apparently?) are after your asses.
The boss fights are truely immense. The first true boss fight
(I don't count The Executioner as you don't have to kill him) is an exilirating, tense scrap were you and your partner co-operate to try and
incinerate him (hint!). And it just gets better from there on in.
One of the highlights from Resi 4 for me was the conservation of ammo. This made all encounters tense as you tried to aim for the vital spots to take the enemy down as quickly as possible with the least amount of ammunition. This, to my relief is in Resi 5 to a certain extent. During the first few levels the guns you have are scarce and any ammo you have is limited. However after a while you start to horde a collection of handgun, machine-gun and shotgun ammo and you start to rely less on you aiming skill and mor on the size of your gun because ammo is not an issue. This is a mistake however, atleast if you want to make the closing levels easy, but who wants to do that? Things get hairy again and you best make every last shot count because your going to need every last bullet to hit a vital spot if you don't want to resort to your knife, and in later levels, that is fatal.
If you buy this game make sure to invite a friend round who knows what they are doing. You don't want people fucking around in the later levels because a death for either you or your partner means you have to start from the last checkpoint. Although they are well spaced out and you are never going to have to do alot again if you die, all the ammo carries over, so if you wasted all your sniper shots last time, you won't have any more when you come back. So dying becomes a big no no, which is a good thing.
2 player split-screen is the best way to play this game and I highly advise not to play it any other way if you want to get through this game alive. Okay, I'll accept online if you've got mic's and are with a good partner but any other way and your not doing it right. In one player th partner AI is not quite up to scratch and you'll often find them in rushing into fatal situations or running out of ammo fast. And if you play with someone who does not know what they are doing, well see Left4Dead for details.
Overall this is a great game and, online, is fairly cheap for a brand-spanking new game at only £35 whereas you'll expect to pay at least £40. One of the best games out recently and is definitely worth a look, even if you are not a fan of the series.
I give this game 8.9 moujini's out of 10.
Hey, I enjoyed that. Maybe I should write reviews more often. What do you think?
