Resolution not staying?

When i play Left 4 Dead, i play in 800x600 resolution. When I play Team Fortress 2 I play in 1280x960. My Windows resolution is 1680x1050. Lets say i play, then turn off my computer. For some reason, my computer reverts to the resolution to the game i last played and doesnt stay in my Windows resolution.
Anyone know why this is happening?

This happens to me sometimes. I find these things help.

1. If you cancel out explorer, make sure to bring it back before you shut down.
2. Don't shut down immediately after you exit out of the game. Give your computer a little time afterwords.
3. If you are on a laptop, try to avoid closing the screen shortly after exiting out of the game.
4. Hit disconnect first and then exit. It works for me for some reason.

That's what I do to avoid that problem. Hope this helps.

If you put your computer into standby while playing games it can sometimes cause issues.

Do you have some kind of dx level 8/9 startup command in your startup options?

Here is what you do:

1. Right click TF2 on steam.
2. Go to properties.
3. Click "Set launch options".
4. Type in "-width 1280 -height 960", or whatever your resolution is.
5. Go have fun.


This should work, and like it was said above, having a dx level 8 startup command can also cause a problem with your resolution.

Well, this is probably another Vista glitch, since some friends and I on Vista 64 and 32 both have this issue. This affects not only source games, but all in general.

Another issue that occasionally occur is the main monitor being switched to my side monitor. Gets extremely frustrating since I can't organize my desktop.

I really should upgrade to Win7.
