Normally I run with a ping of 50ish on the TF2F servers, and 20-50 on most East Coast servers, and 100+ on the UK/West Coast/etc servers.

Download Speed: 1131 kbps (141.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 361 kbps (45.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
That's what it is currently out of Rochester(The place I get it from)

Out of chicago:
Download Speed: 239 kbps (29.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 94 kbps (11.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Why are all the TF2 servers listing themselves at 500+ ping for me? EVERY single one. EVERY SINGLE one.

And the Ventrillo is too.
Yet I just downloaded a video in the pickle of a click...I'm having no lag when surfing.  It's only in relation to Vent/TF2 that I seem to be incapoocitated.

Wait so the problem is that the TF2T servers are listed as 500+ ping by the steam search but when you connect it is around 50 ping.  You bandwidth is meaningless as long as it is above 56k.  My speculation is that the listing is runing through a steam server which happens to be far away from where you are, but when you make a direct connection you cut out the middle man.  Test it out and have the TF2t servers listed in your favorites, that should let you have a direct connection and give you what you want.

No, prior to today my pings were always 50ish, and the highest I ever saw was something like..200-300...

But now every single server is 500+.
So it's not a Tf2F server issue, and I really don't get it.

It /was/ 500+, but then a few hours after I made this thread it dropped back down to it's normal ping-range.

I'm still completely confused as to what the hell was going on.

Definately a glitch in the matrix . No basically you never get a direct connection to your destination. You go through hubs called hops, and the more hops you go through the longer it takes. Now if a hop is malfunctioning it will dump its load (no pun intended) to another hop nearby to get you to your destination. Sometimes this makes many many hops and will therefore cause you to have high ping.

Remember electricity travels at close to speed of light as an electron is slightly heavier than a light particle. (is this correct?)
So your data might travel around the entire country withing 50 ms or it might take 500ms all depending on how many hops you make. Hope this clarifies it.
