Scouts - The Stalemate Breakers

When I say stalemate in the topic title, I don't mean when time runs out in certain maps, I mean when neither team is making an offensive push, and no one is gaining or losing any ground.

In maps such as Dustbowl, where one team attacks and one defends, far too often I see the Blu teams offensive push being blunted due to a good Red defence, and the Blus decide to just sit and wait in one area with a few sentries and dispensers, hoping the enemy sentries will just destroy themselves.

This is where a good scout, or a few scouts which is even better, can 'sharpen' the offensive edge again, and help the Blus regain the initiative. All it requires is the Scout, or Scouts, to rush to the enemy CP, taking out as many people as possible, hopefully making the CP bar go up a bit. This can provide the morale boost a losing team needs to get back on the attack.

Occasionally, maybe...but turrets rip scouts up so fast, not to mention defending soldiers and demos, that unless both teams are fighting through one route and ignoring another so the scout can flank and get behind them, it's unlikely a scout will be able to break through a good stalemate defense too easily.

I have to agree with Vancha here.. a good defense can destroy a scout easily. If I were on defense, I would try my best to not leave an area unguarded.

a single turret can only shoot at one scout at once. that being said, a scout push should have some backup, such as snipers helping from afar, or demos launching grenades into the fray.

if the defense is rolling with 2 turrets, a pyro, and a demoman w/ stickies on the CP, don't even bother - pick a diff strategy instead. perhaps a combination of spies and demo-medic pairs.

If you can sneak through, it makes a great distraction, bringing defenders back to the CP.

As a scout in dustbowl I try to run by the first cp, and turn back and harrass the engineers/teleporters/dispensers to draw them back and start forcing them to defend the second cp as soon as they percieve they will lose the first. Seems to work alright, if I can get by. Works great on the first one, since you can double jump and make them take the long way (since they can't get back in the grate after it closes).

A few well placed sentries can melt off a scouts face in nanoseconds.
I am amazed by the amount of engineers that have such poor turret placement.

This might work if you have like 5-6 scouts, but then that would cripple the rest of your team. I'd have to say an uber-ed pyro/solider/heavy or hell, even demo to go in first, and spies to sap the turrets.
