Hey everybody,

I am new to the site, but definitely not new to the game. Apologies if my post will be kinda long, but I want to ask the community a few questions regarding some potential improvements (or downgrades?) to TF2.

Do you think players can and will benefit from an in-game pointing device? For example, in the map orange, there is the building in the center right. Let us say a sniper is hiding out in the window, and you can only see him from a certain angle. You want to tell your teammate that there is a sniper in the window, so you, in a rush, type or say 'sniper in the window!' Your teammate may be confused, and then you may die because he/she wasn't sure which window you were referring to, and during the confusion, he gets you all.

If we were to have some sort of in-game pointing, such as pressing the number 7 or something, we may be able to improve player communication. So going back to the previous scenario, we see the sniper, press 7, and then a blue line visible only to your teammates will show pointing from your gun to the target, and then your teammates will know where the potential target is.

I was just wondering if such a mechanism can work, and if you guys don't mind and are willing to take the time, we can discuss this a bit. Thanks for reading!

Sounds good in theory, but it could be a potential breaker... Unless it's ONLY a pointing device, and doesn't show any information or actually show their silhouette, ONLY pointing at that spot.

And welcome to the Fort!

Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, I was thinking that it would only be pointing at the target. I figured if it shows any information or the silhouette even, it'll make the game less fun. With just the pointing, I feel like it could improve some of the communication.

I was also thinking of another scenario. How would players feel if the game had like, a hot-spot radar? We would have a normal-looking radio such as the ones in Counter-strike, but it can also give slightly more detailed information about where all the action is happening. I feel like it would be fun to have this feature, and since TF2 has all the quick respawns, this would be a great way to get right back into all the action.

Just some thoughts. I enjoy discussion and hearing what others think!

No.

1) After you tell somebody "there's a guy there!" now he has this arrow on his screen pointing there for a bit, and the enemy is probably already gone.

2) I don't want a crap load of tiny arrows cluttering my screen with things that are easy to see anyway.

3) Radar? Now you don't even have to turn around to see a Spy is there. Or maybe you say they shouldn't show up on radar. Radar is a bad idea, anyway, ruins flanking, to name just one thing.

4) Just say it into a mic. "Sniper over there." Now you've reached pro communication status.

Or just name all the part of the map.  Say your on granary, if you defeding the last point and you say "Sniper on the pipes", people will look at the pipes.

On the last point of dustbowl there are 2 houses overlooking the last point, one with the bunker, another with the ledge over looking the trench.  So we call it the bunker house and the ledge house.

So just name different areas with your team/clan/friends, and call out where stuff is realitive to these areas.

Thanks for the responses!

I agree with the fact that say we do point out the guy, he may already be gone by the time another person notices him/her. I play the game for fun and don't really play as seriously as other players, but I'm just out looking to see what can possibly be done.

I also totally agree with just naming different parts of the map. It's actually very effective as well.

Sorry... I was just trying to gather some thoughts of what you guys think. I'm doing a project for school and using TF2 as my topic, and I also play TF2 frequently. I just wanted to know a little bit of what you guys think about some of these supposed scenarios.
