For some reason, I am 5x more accurate with the engineer shotgun than with any other class' shotgun. As scout, soldier, pyro, HW, my shotgun skills are poor-to-nil; I can't hit a barn door and get mowed down by other classes.

As engineer, I seem to hit every time, and I'm just mowing them down. It's even the same with pistol kills! My pistol is frickin' scary as engineer, but scout, spy pistols are pretty much useless in my hands.

I think it's something about feeling safer, because my sentry's nearby, that lets me go out, take some risks, safely retreat - and the enemy's space is cut down, which lets me hit them more easily. But I can't really describe it very well.

So, does anyone else get this?

Its mainly the speed of the engineer class,  Its a good speed and matches most other classes so you can strafe with them the easiest.  Should be the same accuracy as with the pyro.  But yea, engineer shotgun is a pretty bad ass weapon.  I actually use that more than the sentry gun for kills.  Theres also the fact that with engineer you're never pressured to push forward by youself, expecially with the pistol at hand.  Get in a couple shots with the shotgun and then retreat with the pistol.  It just all works together really well.

Heh, Chro, I know you're a big fan of the shotgun, I hoped you'd post.

Actually, I reckon this might be the core of it. You get to fight slightly weakened enemies who have to push forward into your zone of control, they're overextended and vulnerable and you can get some solid shots in while they're distracted.

I was thinking the same thing, also you are maybe targeted less them when youre a pyro, solly, or esp hwg. You are less of a threat to the enemy.
I never really play pyro or hwg but i do play solly about as much as engie and i notice the same thing.
Basically, when i´m a solly and using the shotty people are shooting me, i want to kill them as fast as possible so i hurry the shots. when i´m an engie i really time my shots. I just want to do damage and support my team. If theres a friendly solly nearby i help by distracting the opponent and causing a bit of dmg so that the solly can kill him.

I find myself to be more accurate with pyro and soldier shotgun, oddly. Despite all the shotguns being the same, I find soldier shotgun gets more kills, probably because I use it to quickly finish damaged opponents. Pyro shotgun is mostly because it's again, a quick switch from my previous weapon which was aiming the same way. However, perhaps my engineer shotgun opinion is biased because I can't see what happens when I shoot a  spy, probably my most common target.
Maybe I need to run into more fights as engineer.

Acctually, Solly loads faster than pyro.  Not sure about the others.  Oh, the scouts scatter gun is less accurate.

Now you know...(somebody finish this line).

GEEEE EEYYYEEEE JOE!

I agree with the idea that engie has a fallback (his sentry/dispenser), so he can rough himself up  a bit and still be just as valuable to the team (let's face it, 90% of the power behind a engie is his buildings).

Also, it needs to be mentioned that the engy gets lots of shotty crits when the sg is dealing damage.  The speed change in your running speed that Chro mentioned is a huge factor in accuracy differences that people experience in trying different classes other than between engy to pyro and vice versa.

One other thing is that the scout does not have the same gun as the engy/pyro/hw/solly.  The scouts scattergun has a much wider spread.

The shotty is a beast though.  It takes a little getting used to, but now I love it.  The pistol has it's uses, but I would love an alternative.
