This isn't exactly a tip but does anyone think the Demoman should have a sidearm everytime someone gets close to me i get killed unless i'm lucky i reckon valve should in a later patch add a side arm or at least the cool looking dynamites

The Demoman is the only class without a direct damage weapon for a reason. Valve won't be changing this and truthfully, I love the challenge of gibbing my opponents with a nade to the face.

you do have a side arm. The regular grenade launcher. If they get close you bottle em. Seriously, the demo may already be somewhat overpowered in a good players hands. You give them a sidearm which, is also not a close quarters weapon but more of an accurate distance weapon and you will have a base defending machine. Demoman is fine. Any changes would be bad for one reason or another. The balance in the game is done extremely well.
I rack up a good number of bottle kills on most rounds. If you are trying to reload when someone is closing the distance you are going to die. Switch to the bottle and swing away but be sure to taunt if you get the kill.
Learning how most people play other classes is very important. Sliding around rockets and not letting scouts get out of your FOV are just things learned with practice.

it's not really necessary to give the demo a different side-arm.  after putting countless hours into demo play, you will develop a pretty good feel for using the grenade launcher at close quarters - it just takes practice.

a couple tips for CQC as a demo...

jump around a lot.  it makes you a harder target, and since you are at a slight speed disadvantage to most classes, every little bit helps.  it also helps against soldiers where splash damage becomes an issue.

if you can get some separation, use sticky bombs to force your opponent to choose one route to attack you.  reducing the area you have to cover with your grenade launcher makes it easier to get those direct hits.

finally, the goal is to hit someone with the grenade before the grenade hits anything else.  make sure your shots are fired with this in mind - the top of the grenade's arc should be only slightly higher than head level when fighting in the open field.  give your 'nades the best chance to do some REAL damage!

it's harder than spamming tunnels and such, but with practice it becomes a rather exciting challenge.

if those all fail, whip out your bottle and maybe your enemy will drop their guns and take you on the old-fashioned way =)

if demoman had a sidearm...he'd be unstoppable unless they got rid of one of his other weps.
