In the past 2-3 weeks I decided I wanted to be a demoman (there was a lot of ambiguity surrounding my class play before then) and since then I've noticed my thought process as a demo is very different from when I play other classes because I'm developing. I figure I'd like to speed up the process, so what exactly (in your opinion) makes a smart demoman?

Links to demos and specific things to look for as well as examples or whatever you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

A smart demoman is one who knows when to switch weapons.

...That's about it. The rest is just aiming skill.

You can also add in finding clever places to put sticky traps, which is the most effective in 6v6.

Another big part of being a smart demoman includes getting to the middle first on maps like Well, Granary and Badlands. Watch sway.Destro's demos for the best ways to get to the middle of each map.

When to be a team player and stick back to guard a point to prevent backcapping while your team pushes with a higher chance to get more points.

Where are the best sticky traps and what are some innovative sticky traps.

How to use all your weapons effectivly.

When to retreat.

How to protect the medic the best.

How to kill their medic. A common tactic is if you see a combo running past a trap and you see the medic following to detonate when the medic passes over (or under).

These are just a few things that come to mind, and definitely watch some demos.

I've recently watched Destro's (Badlands), Alexwut's (pretty sure it was gravelpit), Animeman's (pretty sure it was granary) and The Mario Clone's (dustbowl) demos, any other important ones would be great.

Play enough so that you learn to predict enemy movement. The sticky has a meaningful delay from the moment it leaves your gun to the moment it arrives in a spot where you want to detonate it, so the idea is to have the enemy player and your sticky arrive in the same place at the same time. I'm not talking about just straight up deathmatching out in the open either. Fighting people around corners and other tight places requires good movement prediction, especially in places like the houses at mid in badlands or just about anywhere around point 2 of well.

Likewise, not all sticky traps are camped for a long period of time. Sometimes you only have time to get 1 or 2 stickies down before they turn the corner, but more often than not, that's enough. Simlarly, learn where some of the really tricky traps are. Watching demos and just playing the game a lot is good for that.
