I see a "Create Server" button and I've heard about the dedicated server tool, which allows what exactly? more control? what's wrong with the "Create server"? I also heard that the dedicated servers lag like hell without a computer who bought with your soul.

What's the dealio?

no patience at all   29 minutes?

Anyways, create a server creates a listen server where the resources to the server and the client as well are ran on  your computer and the dedicated server is strictly server side.  Listen servers won't run as smoothly because your entire computer isn't "dedicated" to the server and don't work as well if you want to host something for a lot of people.  Use the listen server if you just wanna run around or if you want to do something on a lan connection with a friend or 2 or 3, but nothing big like that.

I thought I answered this? Never posted:

Create server is a listen server.  You will only be able to host a few people.  Plus you lack control.

As for needing a "computer who bought with your soul", a DS actually needs less resources then a TF2...  You can run a 24-man Dedicated Server on a 2.5 P4.  The main issue you have (with both a listen or dedicated server) is bandwidth.

Also, DO NOT used the steam dedicated server.

Explain when you create a dedicated server and try to add it to Gametracker.com? It always says can't connect to main server. Also explain why theres hundreds of sites offering servers that you have to pay. Explain all of these sounds and mods people add to their server. PC games are confusing.

I think it's a little of both...
on to my question: So dedicated servers cost money if you want to host them right? (20-32 people)

The server software is 100% free (as in beer).  If you wanted to buy a dedicated server (Physical server box located in a data center) it's going to be on the expensive side.  If you want to run a server locally, you can do that easily, but you'll need a lot of bandwidth to handle more then a few players.

If you are interested in buying just a single server, there are server hosting companies in which you can buy servers.  They normally charge per slot.  The upside it that it's cheaper and less experience is needed.  The downside is that you lack control, rely on the company to update your server when needed, and need to deal with customer support in case of server issues you can't fix with your limited access.

If you buy a dedicated box, it's more expensive but you have full control.  Run as many servers as you wish, and run any type of server you wish.  This does require more experience, but I'd be glad to help.  I have helped setup and run many server and I've been working with TF2 server since the beta.
