Soldier? What is so great about these?

I don't understand it. I have attempted soldier, but he is my worst class to play, even more so then heavy. I'm not sure if it is because I do not like offensive push's with anyone other than the spy or scout. Or what.
I think its because I enjoy not getting shot and causing chaos, if nothing more I am good at messing up lines of defense and offense. Or whatnot, but I do know I am bad at the soldier.

So what is sooo great about him?
His clip is small
His rockets are small
His crits are not that damn common
I mean I may be missing something here, but anyone mind helping?

The soldier can do everything, but not as good as the other classes who have specialised to do one job. He is also easy to play (for most players) and can`t be countered effectively... That`s it.

Ah, I prefer HW to a solider, but this is what I see which is good about soliders:

He can rocket jump to inaccessable areas, and in combat a rocket jump pretty much grants a couple of seconds of invulnerability (unless there's a good HW around) plus easy targetting. Very good soldiers with a medic can almost fly around a map (watch Wonderwall play some time).

He can kill easily any class in 1-1 combat except a HW at good medium range.

He tends to take and survive a lot of damage, making him a good medic buddy who charges the uber quickly (though not quite as good as HW for absorbing punishment). Plus, he's a decent recipient for the kritzkrieg.

He can close down some snipers with suppressive rocket fire (which, as a HW, I find invaluable; I can't operate if there are distant snipers).

And, you're wrong about the crits. He'll get more crits than most other classes, as the damage spread of rockets builds his crit% chance very efficiently. I think that only a HW crits more often.

Haha, you can see my class bias throughout this, huh?

It's a fun class, its a great class for clearing out halls and stuff. It can kill almost anything (exluding heavy, unless you have some good cover). It has a decent amount of health and does good dmg.

The drawback: really stupid taunts.

What are you talking about? I love all the taunts, except for the daft salute one with the rocket launcher.

@Cascade - I shoveled at least 3 heavies last night

Soldiers are really just fun for me.  If you can't effectively rocket jump then I can see why it wouldn't be that fun.  A flat-footed soldier isn't going to be very effective.  Soldiers can also juggle enemies which if in a low health situation can keep that pesky pyro away from you.  I know skilled demomen can juggle as well but it's not as common.

Juggling with a demoman reguires them to be in the right range and with better aim/timing then with a soldier.  I can do it sometimes.

There's a lot of debate over whether soldier is overpowered, because it's simply so mobile, so tough and so damaging, with many clear advantages vs. some classes & situations, and no significant disadvantages.

In a game where 30 of the 35-ish tools players can use are for killing, the soldier, arguably, does it most consistently.

Shovel Bomb FTW.. lol... actually they are really random when I get shovel kills.. one of the kills I got last night the heavy didn't turn around once and I hit him like 3 times with the shovel.. and I was between him and his medic.. that was just a fail heavy/medic team
