Just curious, because I consider myself to be a decent to good Spy player, has the Spy been used effectively in competitive play? If so, are there any videos of this available?
Because, there was one occasion where I fought against a very good Sniper player that spy-checked, and brought me down almost every time. The map was a prison yard (I forget the exact name) and I couldn't simply cloak to get around him, because he (and 2 other snipers and a sentry) were on a capture point that was far enough from any kind of cover. So if I cloaked, I would've run out of it as I was about to approach him.

Listen there is no such a thing as a class cannot play in competitive, its just you would be at a disadvantage which means you can play this class but won't be as productive as a demo or solly, before pyros can't be in competitive but because of the update it can now, however even if a spy update comes its not gonna make a difference because communication kills spy. one last thing Chadbro you rock as a pyro!!!!

In competitive play, the players work to eliminate or mitigate each of those advantages that the spy has (cover and cloak being the two most important). So, in certain situations the spy is effective, but it all depends on what the other team is doing. In a situation like the one you're describing, in competitive play, a spy probably wouldn't be the most effective weapon, more than once. Once a team is wise that you're putting a spy against them, they become much jumpier. Now, a spy might be a good diversionary technique. If you're team is trying to push forward, and a spy leads the attack, distracting the other team by sapping the sentry, then the team pushes in, that might be effective.

A spy is purely situational, as explode said. It's an instant flag refresh on CTF maps, and it can be used to take out an on-coming offensive. You can always just medic stalk if you need to, which disrupts their offense. Spies can also be used to distract sentries/etc.

In skilled servers, spy is useless (or almost). There is so much random spam that you get noticed really quick. Even great spies die a lot.

Now that I've played in 6v6 with some pretty damn good players, I'd say it's feasible, but you would have to play perfect.

There is no class that can't be played in competitive, i know it was said before, but it's true. If you play it well enough give it a try, you might be able to really help, but maybe you'd need a 2nd class just in case that start spy checking like crazy. Well actually, maybe not, if they do catch on (and they will), you can also use your team as a distraction, when they're all engaged in combat, taking out their medics will be a crazy help to your team.

This is about competitive play, not a lot of random spam. If competitive play does indeed shift to arena than a good spy can create a major advantage to your team, sometimes fatal to the other team. If the spy can get in and kill a medic, even if he dies, has completely gimped the other team. If the spy manages to take down 2+ people then the other team is greatly gimped and the team will most likely lose/ be evened depending on the players alive on either team. I don't know much about spy in non arena play but in arena a spy can definitely
be worth his/her weight.

Yea, taking out one medic is easy, that's why if competative ever does 6v6 arena, GMan gets a spot. Mwuahahah.
But to be taken seriously, you have to be able to kill the other medic fast, survive, and do it consistantly. That's hard

But to be taken seriously, you have to be able to kill the other medic fast, survive, and do it consistantly. That's hard QFT spies have the potential to win a round for a team, but unlike some other classes, consistency is hard for a spy. You can do everything perfect, but all it takes is one guy to turn around at the right moment to screw it all up. And if you die without taking anyone out, your team is at a disadvantage.
