I find SO much that heavys are using poor firing techniques. everybody madly strafes all over the place, not aiming at all! i personally find that slowly advancing with gentle firing curves to cover all enemies works best, though i suppose if it gets close up then a strafe isnt toooo bad a thing? How do you guys work your heavies?

Conserve your ammo and always know where more is =P.  I find that to be the biggest problem when I play heavy and have a good medic backing me up.

Yeah, the ammo can suck... Dispensers are certainly your friend, and so is picking up enemies weapons.. if you kill a good number of enemies/bullets then you will keep yourself topped up for ages. Try it out

I don't think that there can be much said for firing techniques, anything beyond medium-close range is luck of the draw thanks to the wide spray.  The important skill is to anticipate the start of combat and pre-spin(right-click) your gun when fighting is imminent.  That way you don't have to wait for it to fire and you'll be ready.

Also, remember that just because you're a heavy with a medic, that doesn't mean that your invincible(yet).

Good point.
I keep forgetting this isn't TFC, and I try to jump while shooting. I do strafe when I'm being shot at by another Heavy, and especially if I'm being shot at by a Soldier. I doesn't really affect aiming because the crosshair is just one big circle in the middle of the screen.

Good point Drac, some heavies believe that just because I am healing them they can just run out in the middle of a fight and not die, very frustrating to say the least.
