When I heard about Super Paper Mario, I was stoked. I loved the first two.

Finally it comes out, and while I did enjoy it immensely, I found a lot of the new gameplay disappointing.

I really liked the original battle system, being able to level up, have new moves, have to press proper corresponding buttons for the move to work, having a sidekick in your battles, etc.

What was great about the first two Paper Marios was that it was Mario with an RPG feeling to it. Super Paper Mario steered more towards the classic Mario platformer gameplay.

The bosses weren't as challenging or as hard as the ones that had a life bar in a turn-based battle. It didn't matter how leveled up or how much you have been fighting, it just mattered if you knew what to do and repeat it over and over again. You could avoid getting hurt throughout the whole match.

Do you guys liked the new direction Paper Mario went in or did you prefer the old way?

IMO, Paper Mario for the N64 was the best Paper Mario, and probably one of my personal favorite RPGs.  The Thousand Year Door was also great, and Super Paper Mario, while having a different "feel" to it, was still a good game.  While I preferred the old turn-based, more RPG-like feel of the first two games, I still liked (most) of the gameplay of SPM.  The whole alternating between 2D and 3D was a pretty neat concept, albeit a tad gimmicky.  My major complaints about SPM are that they took out the badge system, and the fact that you only had four party members (not counting the pixls).  Another thing that really frustrated me was that it didn't have as many sidequests as the previous Paper Marios.  I would say, though, that it was glad to see that they brought back the Pit of 100 Trials.  All in all, it was a pretty fun platformer.

I only liked the 1st one, and felt they ruined a lot of the game for the 2nd.

I prefered the first 2  (they are my 2 favorite games ever, hence my icon) SPM was an amazing game, though it wan't qute as good. But it was a unique game. You could say it isn't a fair comparison, like comparing Metroid to Zelda. If they do make 4, however, i want them to make it like the originals.
